Heed blow as Marwood ruled out for the season

Gateshead manager Neil Aspin sympathised with James Marwood following the news that the winger will sit out the remainder of the campaign with an ankle injury.

The 25-year-old has yet to figure since Aspin took charge at the International Stadium three weeks ago, having been absent since October 17.

Marwood will undergo surgery on his ankle later this month, bringing a premature end to a frustrating first campaign back at the International Stadium.

He re-joined the club from Forest Green Rovers this summer, only to miss the Tynesiders’ first eight games after sustaining a broken wrist in a pre-season fixture at Harrogate Town.

Since then, Marwood has been restricted to just ten appearances overall, five coming from the bench.

Aspin will be forced to do without nine first-team players against Woking tomorrow, but as a long-term absentee, the boss empathised with Marwood.

He said: “James is very frustrated, and that’s understandable. Nobody wants to be injured, and to have a full year written off is unfortunate for him and the club.

“It’s very disappointing, but at least we’re clear on the situation now.

“Sometimes, things go in cycles, and fingers crossed, 2016 is a lot better for the club in terms of injuries.

“There have been a lot of injuries this year, so I’m sure the club will be glad to see the back of it.”
