Cheltenham Town will win the National League this season... and here’s why

After 31 games, Cheltenham Town are sitting pretty at the top of the National League table – just one point ahead of nearest challengers Forest Green Rovers.

While their advantage is slight, Cheltenham are playing exceptionally well and look well set to earn promotion to the Football League this campaign.

After the club were relegated at the end of last season, they vowed to make an immediate return to League Two at the first time of asking. Although that’s usually easier said than done, Cheltenham are making light work of their non-league opponents so far this season and simply look a class above the rest.

They have lost just two matches all season – once to Altrincham and most recently to Tranmere Rovers. Since that clash with Tranmere, Cheltenham have gone on a remarkable run and are undefeated in their last 18 league games. At the time of writing, Betway’s football odds show that Town are priced at just 2/5 to win the National League title, and it would be hard to back against them on current form.

A quick glance at the National League table tells you everything you need to know – Cheltenham are the best team in the division. They are top of the table and have a game in hand on their closest rivals, they have scored the most goals in the division and have conceded the least in the division. These two achievements go hand-in-hand and are a recipe for titles, something that Cheltenham fans are beginning to whisper about.

On current form, nobody can stop them. Town have won eight of their last nine league games and are looking ominous at the top of the table. With three of their next four fixtures at home, Cheltenham will fancy their chances of extending the advantage over Forest Green and could more or less secure the title before the business end of the season arrives.

One thing that could hinder their chances are draws. So far, they have been held to a point in 13 games this season – compared to just six for Forest Green. If Cheltenham can turn a few of those draws into victories, they should move clear at the top. If not, Rovers will be there to pounce and at 100/30 in Betway’s football odds, they’re good value. Can you back them at those odds? Certainly... if you believe Cheltenham will continue to slip up.

However, a major slip up isn’t looking likely and many will claim that Town already have one hand on the crown. After suffering relegation, the main objective of this season was to try and build some momentum for a title challenge but nobody expected Cheltenham to obliterate the National League like they have done. With a bit of luck over the coming months, Town WILL be playing in the Football League once again next season.
