Division Two
Pitstone & Ivinghoe 4 Tring Corinthians AFC 2

A groundhopper from another Forum was present:

SSML - Division Two
Pitstone & Ivinghoe v Tring Corinthians 4-2 (ht 2-2)
Venue: Pitstone Pavillion, Marsworth Road, Pitstone (ko 1830hrs)
Entry: £4/2, no programme
Attendance: 45 (Alfie Noakes' h/c of 63 must have included the various non paying youth players etc)
This was a pretty even game, so Pitstone will be very happy to have got the result against a club based just three miles down the road. A very entertaining first half had plenty of action at both ends of the pitch, but initially the visitors' defence proved the more porous. Daniel Payne glanced in a cross at the near post after 7 minutes and 11 minutes later Pitstone were 2-0 up when they found oodles of space inside the Corinthians' box and Jack Stevens got the final touch. This prompted an immediate substitution in the visitors' backline and a change in their fortunes. They pulled one back on 29 minutes with a free header from a corner, and equalised 5 minutes later when good play down the left wing provided a cross that was volleyed home. More chances came and went at either end, but Pitstone were now finding the visitors' defence more difficult to break down.
The entertainment level dropped considerably after the break, and it was difficult to see where the winner would come from. But then on 80 minutes the home team put together a good move that ended with Joe Cowan placing the ball in the net. Two minutes later the Corinthians keeper came out of his box to clear a through-ball, miskicked his clearance and was lobbed by Alec Wallace. Deep into added time, Pitstone had the ball in the net again, but this one was ruled offside. Just as well really, because 5-2 would have been a bit harsh on a decent Corinthians side.
I arrived in the area early enough to pick-up some draught beer and bottles from the Tring brewery and then have a walk around the historic Pitstone windmill that features on the home club's crest. At the ground there's a good sized car park, but even for tonight's modest crowd there were some creative car placements. You enter through a full height turnstile which is part of a very smart pavilion with a tea bar and a good amount of cover from the overhanging roof at the front. There are smart perspex dugouts and an excellent playing surface which is roped off on all sides. In fact, it's all rather reminiscent of an EFL training ground.
Pitstone & Ivinghoe FC used to play at the Recreation Ground on Vicarage Road which was on the south western edge of the village. Behind the ground was a large Cement Works, but these were demolished in the early 1990s and replaced by the Castlemead housing estate. Part of that development involved the village being given ownership of the Castle Cement Works' football facilities, and in 2016 P&I FC moved 200 yards down the road to this enclosed ground. Nowadays, the recreation ground finds itself in the centre of the village and the football club is, once more, based on the periphery.
