Unibond League Challenge Cup Round 3

WILLENHALL TOWN 3 vs CHORLEY 2

Christmas marks the start of the panto season, and after some of the decisions at this game the crowd of 117 thought they’d been to a pantomime performance.

The Reds fielded several changes to their line up and nearly gained an early advantage after just 5 minutes, when Quilt’s free kick was finger-tipped over the bar by stand in keeper Moore.

Three minutes later and it was the Magpies who stole the lead, a slip in the Reds defence allowed Smith to hit a low shot which hit the inside of the post and skidded in the back of the goal.

Vermiglio was then involved in a scuffle with Field, which soon turned into a melee, the visitor’s manger and his assistant making things worse by encroaching onto the pitch to rant at the ref. Unbelievably the ref failed to send them from the dug out, and allowed himself to be subject to the abusive rants for a good minute and half.

Things got worse on 17 minutes, when the ref adjudged Quilt to have fouled a defender, the big striker argued his case and got a booking for something far less than what the ref had took from the visiting officials.

Two minutes and Vermiglio made a meal of a foul by Quilt and the striker received his second yellow and took an early bath.

The injustice seemed to spurn on the Reds and on 22 minutes a goalmouth scramble saw the ball cleared off the line, and from the corner, Field somehow managed to squeeze the ball home.

More antics was to follow on 34 minutes, Smith appeared to elbow Creighton, and then lead with his head, the big defender retaliated and both were invited to join Quilt in the dressing rooms.

With 3 minutes remaining of the manic half, Tyrell found himself clean through, and with just the keeper to beat, found his legs hacked away from underneath him. The penalty was awarded but no action took against the culprit. Whitcombe took the spot kick; the moving keeper saved the first shot but was powerless to save the rebound. The ref had other ideas, and demanded the kick be taken again because of the keeper moving off his line. Whitcombe made no mistake and buried the ball in the back of the net to give the 9 men a half time lead.

The second half calmed down after 10 minutes when the goal of the game came, a Tyrell header found Myers who slipped the ball through two defenders, ran around them to collect the ball and then slotted the ball past the keeper.

The Reds then controlled the game until the dying minutes and indeed sub Hay nearly made it 4 on 73 minutes when his looping header went just over.

With nothing to loose and only 5 minutes to go the Magpies pushed everything forward, and after first hitting the post, they scored on 87 minutes when sub Queeley saw his low shot go in to set up a tense final minute or two.

Reds line up; Vaughan, Webb, Whitcombe, Slater, Creighton, Thomas, Myers, Swann, Quilt, Tyrell, Field. Subs McGheee, Hay, & Colcome.

A massive crowd is expected on Bank Holiday Monday for what looks like being the biggest game in the area when 4th placed Willenhall entertain 5th place Telford. With just a point difference this local derby looks like attracting a big crowd, so much so the kick off is 1pm and fans are advised to arrive in plenty of time.

Monday3rd Jan. sees the Reds visit Lancashire when they take on Rossendale in a 3pm clash.
