Gesture of Goodwill at Gloucester

I was thinking that if everone who is going on Saturday was to take a stick of Margate rock and present it to a child at the game. What would that say about Margate. I will be taking my stick with me.

Joseba, what a kindly (and rich) person you are!

 

Though I am too young to remember this my grandfather, Sheikh Abdullah of the Cowshed, recalled when I mentioned this to him that "rock" was the very reason the Margate FC made the back page of "The Sun" newspaper back on 13th January 1973.

 

This was the day when Margate FC played host to Tottenham Hotspur in the 3rd Rd of the FA Cup, having knocked out Swansea and Walton & Hersham to get there. Spurs had a multitude of talent playing for them, Chivers, Gilzean, Pat Jennings in goal, and up front one Martin Peters!

 

The Sun's headline on the backpage that day was;-

"Peters will make Margate Rock"!

 

Ho hum!
