arschkaltYou prepared for the cold snap? We managed to buy some anti-freeze spray from the local supermarket for 37p as they thought Winter had ended... the joys of being weather forecasters eh?

OK, so what's happening? Gales are already pushing across much of Northern England. Overnight and into Thursday these will become more widespread with severe gales across Scotland during Friday morning.

During Friday, so the low pushes away into the North Sea. The result is that the wind direction veers from South-west to West to North-west and eventually to North... in other words, cold. The winds will touch gale force across all areas as they sink South which means wind-chill will make it feel more like around -15°c for most.

During Friday, so the cold air filters South across all areas. The real change happens behind the cold front which spreads South early on Friday. Behind this, the precipitation will turn to sleet and then to snow with up to 30cm across Northern Scotland.

A trough will push South on Friday across all of the UK. This will fall as sleet for many areas, however in the heavier bursts this will change to snow and snow cover is possible across Western areas for a time on Friday evening, even as far South as Cornwall!

A bitterly cold night to come on Friday night with temperatures down to -10°c across the North, but below freezing across all areas.

Into Saturday and the Northerly continues. This means snow for Northern Scotland and also North-west England and into Chester courtesy of the Cheshire Gap.

As with any Northerly, it will be cold, in fact *very* cold for many areas with a widespread frost, however snow in these airstreams is usually exclusive to the chosen few and many areas will remain dry and cold with frost.

Into next week and the gales roll back in from the Atlantic. I think we need a holiday...
