Citizens Buried by Bury

Recommended Posts

You get those games in football when no matter what you do you are chasing a result and so it was today , although having fully 80% of the play the Citizens came away from the Recreation Ground with nothing.

Mark Blackburne donned the goal keepers jersey in place of his brother who was absent due to work commitments at Wycombe Wanderers and really, apart from take the ball out of his net, the lad had little to do.

Vince Rispoli's speculative lob from distance was just over 5 minutes in but at the other end a dubious free kick was headed back into the area and home captain John Barker scored for Bury with 11 minutes gone.

Although the visitors were threatening the home goal it was a long ball forward and the Citizens defence caught flat footed that allowed Bury to score a second, ex-Welwyn player Matt Draper finding the net 22 minutes in.

The visitors were playing some excellent football on the bumpy surface and came close on numerous occasions but the goal was eluding them. Adam Wallace was unlucky minutes before the break failing to turn in a Fabio Valenti corner.

The Citizens started the second period as they had ended the first with Stuart Blackburne having a rasping shot narrowly deflected and Richard Morton's header just over.

Lack of concentration at the back allowed Bury their 3rd, Matt Draper scoring his second with 15 minutes left.

Paul Mark's scored one back for the visitors a minute before the end but it was too little to late.

WGCFC: M Blackburne, Pilides (Kaphouris), V Rispoli, McKay, Texeira (Thompson),Taylor, Marks, Morton, S Blackburne, Wallace (L Rispoli), Valenti.

A fine effort by the team with a number suffering from the flu it was just one of those days.

The boys have time to pick themselves up before the re-arranged game at home against COCKFOSTERS on Thursday

The report in the Welwyn & Hatfield Times describes it as a 'shock defeat' for Welwyn Garden City however I beg to differ, St Margaretsbury are a good side particularly at Station Road:

If Oracle could just remove his rose tinted specs for a moment, he might realise that St Mags are nearly top of the form guide, and one of only two unbeaten sides in the last six games!

Hi Horace I hope you are well.

I can only post what I see and this was like a training game one side attacking and one defending. They had three chances and scored three times, we had untold chances but only scored once. That's football, be interesting to see how we get on against Cockfosters on Thursday, seeing as they beat Hertford Town last Saturday

In all seriousness what has gone wrong as Kentish Town can't buy a goal at present let alone a win, only a year ago on Thursday an outstanding team, you included, were thwarting everything Royston Town could offer inflicting their first defeat in seventeen games on the way to the Division 1 Championship. Even Nellie has run out of excuses and has been conspicuous by her absence lately.

Not tonight though, the worrying thing is that Tring Athletic are not renowned for scoring lots of goals in games.
