Viking Greenford to fold

The Seagrave Haulage Combined Counties League will be one team short next season following the sad demise of Viking Greenford. The club that launched the careers of future England internationals Les Ferdinand and Alan Devonshire, have been forced to fold because it couldn't afford another season in the Combined Counties League. Roy Bartlett, who formed the club (then called Viking Sports), as a 14-year-old just after the Second World War, was naturally hugely upset by the closure. He decided to call it a day now rather than pay £700 to register for the league next season and be hit with a fine when they pulled out at a later date. And the now 73-year-old believes that his club's downfall is a sad reflection on changes in society. The club's ground at Avenue Park is currently being leased to Viking Ladies. Viking Greenford still have a veterans side, and Bartlett has allowed them to continue using the club's name.
