Division One

2 1 Sport London e Benfica v Amersham Town

A report on the match of the day:

Sport London e Benfica 2 Amersham Town 0

Prior to this match these two teams so far this season had taken between them only three points out of a possible fifty four. So it was never going to be a game for the connoisseur. As is so often the case with two poor sides, however, there were plenty of chances at either end. However, Sport London e Benfica certainly troubled the opposing keeper more and, on balance, deserved their win.

Sport London had the advantage of an early goal. On eight minutes a long cross from the left gave their forward a free header which Craig Garratt in the Amersham goal was relieved to claw away for a corner. Amersham, however, failed to learn their lesson and, from a similar cross one minute later, Michael Ludia made no mistake, nodding the ball in to the net to Garratt’s left.

Amersham nearly equalised immediately. Rob Baker and Gerald Kelly combined well to put Ben Gray through on goal but long serving Sport London keeper, Fernando Seidi, saved well. On twenty six minutes Garratt saved equally well at the other end, going full stretch to deflect a powerful drive from twenty yards. Amersham went straight to the other end where Kelly beat his man on the line and crossed for Baker to

side foot just wide.

Sport London nearly increased their lead thirteen minutes into the second half when their forward was clean through but Garratt saved with his legs. Eight minutes later, from a long throw by Baker, Aaron Nash Barker returned the ball across goal where it grazed the far post before going out of play. Amersham left back Miles Smith then had to be alert to intercept a dangerous Sport London attack and drive the ball for a corner.

On seventy four minutes JJ Phillips, on as an Amersham substitute, had a shot cleared off the line. However, in their next meaningful attack on eighty five minutes Sport London increased their lead. There seemed little danger when Martin Irumgu received the ball but he left three defenders flat footed and smashed his shot past Garratt.

Amersham Town: Garratt, Groves, Smith, Johnson, Hudson, Wallcott, Baker, Harman, Nash-Barker, Kelly, Gray. Subs: Phillips, Loakes, Rojo, Byrne, Kibaida.

0 1 Ascot Utd v Hertford Town

A decent report on this affair from another's Forum in front of a large 143:

ASCOT UNITED 0 Hertford Town 1

FA Vase, Second Qualifying Round

Att : 143

The Racecourse Ground, Ascot Racecourse, off Winkfield Road (A330)

Admission : £3.00 (concession). Programme : £1.00. Cheeseburger : £3.00. Coffee (large mug) : £1.50

Several previous posters have described this well maintained ground positioned within a few yards of the racecourse. It's certainly an attractive venue and the immaculate pitch encourages footballers to try out their skills. The impressive brick clubhouse was opened quite recently and the overall impression is of a club that's very much on the up. This is borne out by the fact that Ascot are currently top of the Hellenic League's Premier Division.

Today's match - played throughout in bright sunshine - was entertainingly open with the two teams concentrating mostly on attack and rather less so on defence! Early chances were created at either end and Hertford's Ashley Harris - promoted from the reserves following the previous goalie's departure - brought off a dramatic save with his feet to prevent what looked like being a certain lead for Ascot. Good moves were constantly put together, but a lack of finishing meant it was still 0-0 at the break.

The second half maintained the same frantic pace and, once again, Harris distinguished himself with a finger tip save on the hour. Almost immediately afterwards, visiting centre forward James Peagrum - along with Harris a candidate for Man of the Match - fired an extraordinary 40 yarder into the top right corner with the home keeper nowhere near it. Now the game really took off and a series of penetrating runs on both wings and through the centre from the increasingly confident visitors seemed likely to bring further goals. After 66 minutes, one of these incursions ended with a trip and a consequent penalty award. Strangely, this was entrusted to a sub rather than the in-form Peagrum and the kick was saved without too much difficulty. Ascot's no. 2 then rattled the crossbar with a header before Peagrum continued to steal the show with further runs which led to last ditch clearances and a penalty appeal turned down by the referee. Plenty of stoppage time at the end, and although Ascot kept looking for a late equaliser, Hertford were the dominant force and should really have added several more to the single goal which ensured their passage into the next round.

Amongst those present were travellers from Sutton Coldfield, Ipswich and Buckinghamshire. I enjoyed a very pleasant chat with photographer Arthur Evans ("Non League Directory" and "Football Traveller") during the half time period.

GBG ticks were in Waltham St. Lawrence and Ruscombe where beers from Two Bridges, Windsor & Eton & Hammerpot were all in fine fettle!

F.A. Vase Second Qualifying Round

2 3 Berkhamsted v Eton Manor

A report on Berkhamsted being found out yesterday from another's Forum:

Berkhamsted 2-3 Eton Manor

FA Vase 2nd Qualifying Round

A very enjoyable Vase game at Broadwater this afternoon with a real end-to-end feel in the first half.

Manor took the lead on 10 minutes from a disputed free kick right on the edge of the box - it seemed to me a tangle of legs between attacker and defender which are sometimes given, sometimes not, but that didn't deter Michael Marin from stepping up and curling the ball low into the corner to make it 1-0.

The equaliser came 5 minutes later from a simple big hoof down the field that strangely the Manor defenders didn't deal with having almost been caught out by a similar ball just a minute or so earlier, with Tony Burnett toe ending the ball past Manor keep Paul Daley.

Parity didn't last long though as slack defending allowed Manor back in front just a minute later with Richard Priest scoring from close range.

Berko hit the underside of the crossbar in their attempts to get back on terms again, with the referee waving away any notion of the ball having crossed the line, but they were handed a lifeline five minutes from the break when James Bryant clumsily went into the back of James Armstrong in the box and the referee pointed to the spot. Armstrong took the penalty and rifled it past Daley to end a very entertaining half 2-2.

Perhaps it was inevitable that the second half couldn't live up to the heights of the first, but the game could have gone either way. Sadly the referee made a rod for his own back by booking a Berko player for a soft challenge and, surely to avoid that oft-heard criticism from the touchline, made sure he wasn't inconsistent by booking pretty much every player for a foul from then on.

The decisive moment came mid way through the half when Manor substitute Gabriel Onireti thumped the ball home to put his side 3-2 up - a lead that Berko huffed and puffed at, but despite the inevitable grandstand finish, rarely looked like endangering again.

As I said before, a very entertaining game that even a fussy second half refereeing perfromance could do little to spoil and so it's back to East London for the next round and the visit of a familiar club to me, FC Clacton, who won 4-0 against Saffron Walden today.

F.A. Vase Second Qualifying Round

6 2 AFC Dunstable v Barkingside (11:00am)

4 1 Cockfosters v Halstead Town

I wonder how many others did 'doubles' yesterday with Creasey Park as the first port of call:

AFC Dunstable 6 Barkingside 2 FA Vase

Admission £4

Programme £1

Tea 50p -in a paper vending cup.

h/c 86

After 6 minutes of this game the score was 2-2 with the visitors twice taking the lead only for Dunstable to equalise. The goals dried up for 20 minutes, then the home team took the lead. The second half saw three more home goals as the home team defended better. A very enjoyable game. Creasey Park is a building site at the moment and just has a smallish arena seating stand down one side and another small covered terrace behind the goal. I look forward to returning when work is completed.

Cockfosters 4 Halstead 1 FA Vase

Admission £4

Programme £1

Tea £1 ( pricey for this level, in a small plastic cup. Bacon cobs were disappointing at £1.50, very little meat.)

h/c 54

Parking at this ground was a nightmare, with only the tiniest club car-park and a large turn out at the local bowls club we arrived 90 minutes before kick off and found the last spot on Chalk Lane without a yellow line. Soon 5!!! traffic wardens were walking along the road and all the cars parked on the yellow lines were getting tickets. So anyone planning to go see Cockfosters beware and park a little further away. There did seem to be an estate at the back of the ground with parking and perhaps there is some further along the one way section of Chalk Lane. The first half was dull with both teams looking poor, half time saw the score at 0-0. The second half was much better. The home team scored after 50 minutes from a mis-hit shot and then Halstead equalised from a great individual effort from the visiting number 11. You won't see a better goal in the Vase this season. Cockfosters scored three goals in the last 15 minutes, Nicky Steward completing his hat trick. The final score rather flattered the home team as Halstead weren't three goals worse. They hit the post and their striker managed to blaze over from 10 yards out.

So 13 goals from 2 games, not a bad return.
