Division One

2 3 Bedford v Harpenden Town (at Biggleswade Town FC)

25

An interesting report on this one from another's Forum:

Spartan South Midlands League, Div One, 3pm

Bedford FC 2 Harpenden Town 3 (H/T 1-1)

Entry - £3 (largely voluntary) including smart b/w programme which had about 20-24 pages and was a good read with histories of both clubs included.

Crowd - about 20, crowd next door was only about 3 times that number!

As many of you already know, Bedford are currently using the outside pitch at Biggleswade Town until the end of this season, and with both clubs being at home I just had to be there today. In fact I was so worried about dozens of hoppers being there and buying all the programmes that I arrived at 1.40pm. Programmes were on sale at that time (look for the bloke hanging around the car park between the two pitches/grounds) but as things were, only about 4 or 5 other hoppers were at the game and the only programme sell-out may have been next door for Biggleswade Town v. Atherstone.

The outside pitch looked immaculate and it was hard to believe that it was not there in Oct 2009 when I had ticked the main ground for an FA Trophy tie v. Chipstead, which had been a gloomy and chilly day. Today saw sizzling hot weather and I may have got slightly sunburned as there is no shade, let alone cover. There are a couple of spacious brick-built dugouts and the pitch is roped along 2 sides with thick circular wooden stakes. I was also impressed to find that there are brick changing rooms serving this pitch, separate from the main ground. All this must have cost a fair amount of money and some locals may have preferred it to have been spent on more cover and terracing in the main ground.

The programme referred to the previous Saturday's home game (v. Amersham) being "our first win on the front pitch at Biggleswade". I am not sure if this reference to the "front" pitch is to the main one or the outside one but if it is the latter then Bedford may be using it for all games even if Biggleswade Town are away. Don't blame me though if Bedford turn out to be using the main pitch on your visit! The match was a fairly entertaining encounter, although Harpenden's yellow and blue shirts were so badly designed that at first glance it looks as if they are wearing yellow training bibs over blue shirts. It was an enjoyable afternoon and having done 4 different grounds/pitches in Biggleswade now I am becoming quite familiar with this town.
