Is the other one Gareth Southgate?

A friendly on 1st February 1991 against Crystal Palace.

Nothing on our web-site regarding this match but I do recall something about Stan Collymore also being in their squad but refusing to play (or was that just an urban myth?)

I’ll help him with the Peter Taylor…. home FA Cup match against Dartford 29th October 1988, we lost 2-1 with Peter Taylor scoring their winner in the 75th minute.

Yep.

Well done Curtis.

( I thought that was the second "easy" one.)

He knows his stuff, does Curtis.

Well done again.

I thought that one was going to be very hard to find out !   👍

It was a Friday night friendly.

Gareth Southgate was right back for Palace.

It was about a month before he made his first team league debut for Palace.

Can't say I remember what you say happened with Stan Collymore Curtis, but the match programme has Stan listed in the Crystal Palace line-up  at number 8 for the game.

Stan Collymore played his last game against us as a non league player in the Conference League scoring twice in an  away game for Stafford Rangers  3 - 4 to Slough before joining the team in the news regarding our players Southend and went on to have a great career with Nottingham Forest.

A good omen🙏

It was a great question HR.

It has a time when the club appear to have had some great friendly matches…. just recalled that Palace had been FA Cup finalists in 1990.

And also found that there was a friendly with Chelsea in 1991

Nice to know you thought it was a decent question Curtis.

I was at both the first drawn 3-3 Cup Final match and the replay at Wembley in 1990.

This Palace friendly was on a Friday night, and the next day, Saturday, the Palace first team were away I think at Nottingham Forest in a Division 1 game, and won 1-0.

Eric Young scored the goal !

Is this anything to do with the Farnborough players changing their names to those of famous players as a Paddy Power publicity stunt?

I think one of their defenders changed his name to Franz Beckenbauer pre-season 2013/14.

Hi Adrian.

It was in the 1963 UEFA Under-18 European  Youth Tournament, which was held in England  partly to celebrate the English F.A.'s centenary that year.

There were 4 groups each containing 4 teams, the winners of each group progressing to the semi-finals.

The game held at the Dolphin was Greece v West Germany on the 13th April 1963, a group A match.

Greece won 7-2, in front of a 2,000 crowd !

I knew for sure that the famous German player Gunter Netzer played in this game at the Dolphin, and assumed when I saw your question that Franz B. had too.

Looking at my copy of the programme for that Tournament, Franz B isn't listed in the German squad of 17.

However, he could well have played as there was a bit of controversy over Franz at this time.

According to Wikipedia, apparently aged 18 in 1963, he had made a girl pregnant and refused to marry her, so because of this he had been banned from the German youth team by the German F.A., but was re-admitted back into the team after the intervention of the German youth team boss, Dettmar Cramer.

It could well be he was included in the German squad at the last minute after the programme was printed.

Amazingly, Scotland finished above West Germany in Group A, and therefore knocked West Germany out.

England won the competition, beating Northern Ireland in the final at Wembley 4-0 in front of 34,500.

Another famous name listed in the programme was Luigi Riva of Italy, who played in the 1970 World Cup Final.

Thank you so much If I remember Germany were one of the Favourites and again relying on recall led 1.0 at halftime and had missed loads of chances to be eviscerated in the second half !
