Retford United have held an emergency meeting this week in their first steps to stabilise the club after a dramatic few days at the Jones

Bury Town's on-loan goalkeeper Alex Archer looks set to extend his stay with the Blues until the end of the season, according to assistant manager Christian Appleford.

The custodian once again impressed on Tuesday night, but could not prevent the Ram Meadow-based outfit from letting a 1-0 lead slip to 10-men table-toppers Maidstone United, who completed a 2-1 turnaround.

And with Archer's current loan period from Ryman League Division One North outfit AFC Sudbury set to run out next Wednesday (February 4), Appleford confirmed talks have taken place to keep the shot-stopper until the end of the current campaign.

"We have spoken to Alex about his situation, and that should be extended until the end of the season," he revealed after Tuesday's defeat.

"I know the two clubs are in the process of sorting that out now, and that should see Alex remain with us.

"Hopefully it will all be sorted in the next few days."

The defeat to Maidstone leaves Bury bottom of the table, six points adrift of safety, having played as many as three more games as some of their relegation rivals.

Despite back-to-back losses, stretching their winless run to three matches, Appleford remains adamant that the league's lowest scorers will not suffer relegation come the end of the season, ahead of a trip to Leatherhead tomorrow (3pm).

"I feel confident that we won't go down," he added. "We will go into every game fighting and giving our all, and we have made sure that the players know that has to be the case.

"Kingstonian was a blip, and Maidstone was not great, so we have to make sure we are back on it on Saturday and get that run going again, that is key for us now."
