Workington striker Gareth Arnison has overtaken John Smith’s thirty year old goal scoring record becoming the club’s leading scorer of the modern era.

Arni’s eightieth minute strike at the Town End was his 111th league and cup goal for Reds and puts him ahead of John Smith’s tally by one. Gareth had equalled the record with his successful penalty against Buxton then surpassed it with the match winner versus Ilkeston.

John’s 110 goals were scored between 1980 and 1985 with 91 netted in league competition, while Gareth’s 111 have been netted in three spells with the club including 87 league goals.

Workington’s all-time record scorer is Billy Charlton with a staggering 193 goals while Jack Thom (155) and Jackie Oakes (125) are the other centurions. The aforementioned scored the bulk of their goals in North Eastern League football.
