This is really annoying. I'm in my 3rd season at Man Utd, and my team is as follows:

GK Barthez

DR Brown

DL Roberto Carlos

DC Bramble

DC Silvestre

ML Giggs

MR Beckham

MC Veron

MC Mendieta

FC van Nistelrooy

FC Vieri

As you can see this is a very good side, capable of winning the league and possibly Champions League. However, I am 9th in league, after 24 games. Why aren't I doing better?

UK, I'd won absolutely everything whilst managing Leyton Orient!! You've either got it, or you aint!

But seriously, ONE of the contributing factors I've found for success is not to keep changing your formation, either within a match or within a season. Find a formation that works best for your players (and the style you want your team to adopt i.e. attacking, attractive passing, defensive etc), and only make tactical modifications via changes of players.

For example, say your playing 3-5-2 system, but are getting slaughtered on the left wing. Either limit your left-sided player's instructions, or put on a more defensive player in his place. Changing formation in cases such as this doesn't always work. If you do have to change formation within a game, try to leave it to half time.

It works for me! But you have to give it about five matches to see the benefit.

Alternatively, have a very high Intelligence and Adaptability rating for all your players if you still insist on changing formation/tactics frequently [otherwise you only confuse the players and makes you out to be a headless chicken of a manager; I'm thinking of Hoddle here!]

They don't even get a parachute, do they?

Question for you Urchin Boy: Have you heard of the game Football Chairman?

Apparently, when you take control of Billericay you have to choose one of the following options:

1: Run away with the club's financial assets.

2: Move the club to a location where no one, not even nextdoor's mongrel, has an interest in your team.

3: Eject and ban certain elements of the crowd whom, it is discovered, are bitter, twisted, tunnel-visioned idiots with a tenuous grasp of the English language.

4: Apologise to your genuine football fans for the intrusion of to55ers like Sad Damford who give the club a bad name.

5: Instantly remove yourself and your best players to an environment more appreciative of your efforts.

...or is this all just another rumour?

I've always started off at a club with the formation they usually use, but almost always drift off to a 3-5-2, with 3 CB, 2 wingers, 2 DMs and an AM in the middle, supporting 2 strikers. Has brought me great success with West Ham in 01/02 (Premiership 5 times, FA Cups, UEFA Cup and Champions League before the bloody file crashed <img src="/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> )

going back to urchin kids line up, you need a defensive midfielder in there, or if you don't have one, switch style of play to attacking. You might concede three but with that line up you should be scoring loads of goals. Also, try setting all midfielders and strikers to cross ball, try through balls and long shots.

Failing that, have both strikers man mark the keeper. Might get caught offsides regularly, but should also get a few goals a game

rebelboy, my brother used the man-marking the keeper tactic with Leeds and Mark Viduka scored unbelievable numbers of goals - 72 in one season I believe - with hauls of 4 and 5 goals a game not uncommon. One time he got 6. Of course, loads of offsides, but it's a quirk that seemed to work on that occasion !
