Tranmere Rovers boss Gary Brabin is expecting a tough encounter when Southport arrive for the first league derby between the two clubs at Prenton Park since 1975.

The manager says that the two sides are enjoying some of the best recent results in the division which should make for a fantastic game.

He told Tranmere Player: "Southport have found a bit of form of late and it's a game between two teams among the in-form teams in the division.

"The opposition will be up for the game, it's a local derby which hasn't been played here for about 40 years, so it'll be a tough game but it's one we're certainly looking forward to."

Brabin is pleased with his team's current position in the league table but knows that there is plenty of work to do in order to remain in the top five come the end of the campaign.

He added: "We want to get stronger as the season progresses. We're in a good position at the moment, but it's one where we're all realistic enough to know that there's a long way to go and we need to keep performing the way we have been."

A match against a club he has both played for and managed during his career, Brabin says there will be no sentiment before or during the match towards his former club.

"On a personal level, after the game it will be nice to see a few familiar faces but beforehand, we're focused on getting three points."
