Leek boss leads tributes to Grice after landmark goal

Leek Town cruised to victory over Gresley at Harrison Park on Saturday and leading scorer Tim Grice celebrated netting his 100th goal for the club when he opened the scoring in the 23rd minute.

Grice went on to score a second goal 9 minutes later and now heads the First Division South goalscoring chart with 19 strikes although his record in all competitions this season stands at 23.

However, the deserved victory was overshadowed with the sending off of Gresley player-manager Gary Ricketts shortly before the break.

The win sees Blues elevated to 6th place in the table just one point below Spalding United in the final play-off place but with three games in hand over the Tulips.

Blues have now won their last three games on the spin, each of them on the back of clean sheets despite the postponements caused by the weather.

After the game Blues’ boss Lee Casswell commented, “I said during the week leading up to the game that this one was important but in the end the victory was comfortable and the performance was very pleasing considering the weather had seen us without a game for almost two weeks.

“We were a little rusty in the opening 20 minutes of the game and it could have proved to be a banana skin.

“However, we pulled through that sticky patch and then it was all about Gricey. He deserves a lot of credit to have notched up his 100th goal for the club – now we need to keep him fit for the play-off push as we approach the final weeks of the season.

The Blues’ boss was also complimentary about Ryan Grocott and Warren Holmes. “These two lads have been fantastic sitting on the bench waiting patiently for their chance.

“Their attitude has been magnificent week in, week out whilst we try and find them some game time locally as they await their chance,” he added.
