Rushden & Higham United had a great chance to take the lead in the first ten minutes, Charlie Dolden finding a pocket of space inside the box but shooting narrowly over from close range. Instead, Eaton Socon took the lead in the 22nd minute, Ryan Whittingham receiving the ball inside the box and dribbling past a challenge before finding the finish. Eaton Socon spent much of the rest of the first half on top, but they were unable to extend their lead going into half-time.
Rushden & Higham made a better start to the second half and quickly started to put the pressure on the home side, but it took them until the 72nd minute to equalise when David Hunt hit a long-range shot into the bottom corner. The rest of the half saw the away side lay siege to the Eaton Socon goal, but a combination of poor finishing and good saves from the Eaton Socon keeper kept them at bay. Eaton Socon had a couple of chances of their own late on, but Rushden & Higham never looked in danger of conceding.
One of the lowest-quality Step 6 games I have seen in a while, very scrappy throughout on a very bobbly pitch and with very little to really separate the two sides. A draw was definitely a fair result, though in truth Rushden & Higham should be disappointing at the sheer amount of chances they wasted in the last twenty minutes in search of a winner. Based on how this one went, I'm not overly surprised to see that Eaton Socon have drawn all three of their league games so far and that one of those three was goalless.
The ground is better than the average for Step 6, insomuch as neither of the two stands are soulless Arena stands: both seem to have been made by the club themselves and that gives the ground a bit more character than usual even if I'm not much of a fan of the bench-style seating used in the stand in the corner. Both stands are behind the near goal with bench seating in one stand and the other being exclusively covered standing apart from a couple of old park-style benches. A few other metal benches provide uncovered seating in front of the clubhouse. Other than that, hard standing is only on two sides of the ground, with the far goal being out-of-bounds due to space limitations while the far side seems okay for spectator use despite no hard standing.
