Game number 174 of the 2023 / 2024 season
Thursday night new grounds are a rare thing for myself but given the weather of late Non-League clubs perhaps have little choice but to play Saturday, Tuesday and Thursday every week to complete the season.
That all meant a bonus game tonight in the Gladwish Challenge Trophy (or Spartan South Midlands League Cup) between two teams from the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division and Step 5 - Potton United and Tring Athletic.
Now I don’t drive and Potton United is probably the Oxford English Dictionary definition of “middle of nowhere”. That being said Google Maps reckoned it was a 10 minute drive from Biggleswade station to the ground and I noticed upon by visit to Biggleswade Tuesday that there is a 24 hour cab office at the station.
So that all fell in nicely time wise for work - get to Biggleswade station at 7.00PM, hopefully get a cab straight away (as well as obviously book one back) and have a good half an hour or so to take my pictures of a new ground visit and get some grub at the ground (no time en route)!
And it all did indeed work out well as I tucked into a burger and chips at a tidy ground with a stand with seats much like the world famous Terry Mac!
Tring started well and after Benjamin Kakembo had his shot to the bottom left saved by Potton goalkeeper James Hoskins, he got played in over the top and this time squared to Max Hercules for a simple tap in in the 12th minute.
Potton then had a chance when Victor Osobu had a free kick to the top left patted down by Tring goalkeeper Luke Midwinter before Max Hercules became at the forefront of the action - firstly getting booked for simulation in the box and then having an effort at close quarters saved following a scramble in the box.
HT: 0-1 and cue a call to Biggleswade Taxis to pick me up at 9.50PM (more on that below)
Max Hercules was once again in the thick of the action and was unlucky not to score in the 49th minute when he latched onto a ball over the top and his attempt to lob James Hoskins from the edge of the box resulted in him clipping the outside of the right post.
Benjamin Kakembo then had a one on one effort denied for Tring before Potton’s Liam Andrews had an outside of the boot effort caught by Luke Midwinter.
The game saw a big potential turning point in the 71st minute when a ball over the top saw Potton’s Lewis Lynn in only to be brought down by Tring’s Ryan Sharkey who got shown a straight red.
Despite this it was actually Tring who had the better chances after the red card with both Benjamin Kakembo and then Max Hercules denied one on one.
Then I got a phone call at 9.37 PM to say my pre-booked 9.50 PM cab was in the car park. Marvellous until Potton got an equaliser in the seventh minute of second half stoppage time amidst a goal mouth scramble which saw the ball poked home by Shane Fox (or at least he claimed it) to send the game to spot kicks, me telling the cabby to hold on, and limbs with beer spilled by the young Potton fans in attendance…!
FT: 1-1, Penalties:

James Hoskins stopped Tring’s second and third penalties to complete a victory that looked impossible, even in stoppage time, to send Potton into the semi finals in a good night’s entertainment at a welcoming club.
MOTM: James Hoskins (Potton United) - for some big saves in the game and of course the shootout.
