Town narrow gap

By Paul Wreyford

Sawbridgeworth Town 3

Enfield Town 3

Eastway Essex Senior League

Second-place Town had to come from behind to earn a point in an exciting match at mid-table Sawbridgeworth.

And with leaders Waltham Abbey slipping to a surprise defeat, the gap is now down to three points.

The game got off to a flying start with two goals in the first two minutes. Dean Nyman opened the scoring for Town after a neat dummy from Lee Smith, but Greg Pike equalised from the spot almost immediately.

Pike then put the hosts in front on eight minutes and midway through the half Town found themselves two behind.

The visitors, with the wind in their favour after the interval, got back in it on the hour.

Asa Pamplin lofted the ball over the keeper and Paul Campbell headed into an empty net.

The equaliser came in the 79th minute. Rudi Hall drove a free-kick across the face of the goal and Smith reacted first to score with a diving header.

The game boiled over after this. Nyman was red-carded for a second bookable offence, while the hosts finished with nine men.

New signing Maurice Byfield had the best chance to win the match for Town, but his shot late on went just wide of the post.

Town host Eton Manor this Saturday.
