What nice places are there to go for a weekend away in the reasonably close proximity of Middlesbrough?

 

I'm looking at going to the away game up there in May, and the only way I reckon I can swing it is if I combine it with a weekend away for my family too.

 

Heard that Middlesbrough itself is meant to be a bit of a dump, but if there's a nice town nearby with holiday cottages or whatever, we could stay there!

Not my part of the world really, but Durham is supposed to very nice. About 50 mins from Boro on the train, probably quicker in a car.
