BBC ESSEX

Again this week we have a situation where we are getting occassional comments on Grays V Scarborough, Morcambe V Daggers, York v Canvey and Colchester V Bournmouth.

We do have live commentary on that famous Essex team West Ham.

I have the names of over 150 people who agree this is a disgrace and I am therefore going to suggest the following action to those people.

(1) We write formally to the DG.

(2) We write to the PM objecting to local radio stations large budgets.

(3) We ask that our local MP's request a refund on license fee as Essex licenses are subsidising east London coverage.

(4) We will ask under the Freedom of Information Act for a copy of the minutes of meetings where the decision was made to allow one BBC local radio station to target another areas audience. BBC Essex is competing with BBC London.

(5)I intend to contact other radio stations informing them of the situation.

I will be posting this message on all Essex teams websites aking supporters to tune into alternative stations.

We want BBC ESSEX for ESSEX not West Ham.

Not if enough people tell them otherwise, they have already sent me an email saying there is not enough interest in local football.

Phone em!! and tell em you want to hear more Billericay.

Will not take two minutes and you may just get to hear an away match one day, when you could not for some reason travel.

We had BBC Essex down at our gaff on Saturday. Okay, wasn't a full match commentary but they gave the match report and having them there it was quite probably accurate.

They also ask me to ring in the half time and full time scores when they can't be there or it's an away match. We have quite a good relationship with them. They promote our games and anything special we have down at the ground...I believe they print the posters that Simon puts on our web site and post 'em around the office.

Fair enough, it's not the full monty but we're in the Ryman premier not league two, one, championship or premier, which, by the nature of being higher leagues, generate more interest. Me thinks that we have a Canvey supporter that wishes to generate even more interest for his team than having Dick Marshall's column in the Evening Echo, which serves you better than ever. We have to make do with a coloum or two, if we're lucky...Talk about media serving the local interests of the county, it's the Evening Echo is a disgrace.

Agreed but instead of live commentary of west Ham surely you agree a live game from ricay would be better for you club.

The Echo (Southend Bugle)is a disgrace but I do have a choice wether to buy thatI have to pay my license fee.

See my point concerning the level at which we play and the interest countywide for higher leagues...It's the decision that the radio station has to make. Be attrctive to 500 or so "local" teams supporters (like yours and ours) or report on a match that will attract more listeners like Colchester or Southend. Tough one that. It's the way of life unfortunately.

It's your choice that you wish to contest your licence fee but doesn't the fee also go to pay for the service that Auntie provides on the TV. There have been some excellent programmes this year, part funded by the licence fee.

I can't see the problem really. Your status is Conference and by nature have more coverage than we do in the media. Your support base is smaller than the avergae Conference team, so are you hoping that by campaigning for mnore coverage on the radio, you hope to promote your club and increase your gate? Won't happen with your neighbours playing in the top flight League One and your indifferent position in the Conference. From what I've heard, the prices you charge are not exactly cheap when considering what Southend are charging for better football.

It also comes down to the relationship your club has with BBC Essex. As I've said, we have a good one and have no gripes with them. Hate to say it but we know our position in the pecking order, which will improve when we gain promotion to the higher leagues.

Bloody hell ! Can't believe this - two people that agree with me about W*** H*m, MOB and Champions Elect, well said! I've given up moaning about that East London mob dominating Essex football business as I seem to be surrounded constantly by people living locally who think the sun shines out of their collective Iron bottoms - which as Gazza hinted is probably the reason the likes of the Echo/BBC Essex give them ridiculously high coverage in their output - to appeal to the many Hammers fans living in our county. (Let's face it - not many "cockneys" still live anywhere near Upton Park anymore as I have witnessed first hand over the last couple of years...)

But however the Echo/BBC Essex may justify it, the bottom line is it IS a disgrace that so much of their output is given to a team from outside our county via media that cover a specific geograpichal area. I wouldn't complain about the coverage that Ricay get on BBC Essex at present as we are in Ryman Premier now and competing with at least six other clubs for exposure, plus there's Thurrock ahead of us in the Connie South. Surely though with two FM frequencies, a MW one and the internet service, commentary should be on Southend and Colchester, plus two from Grays, Canvey and Daggers on rotation/availability, then move down to Thurrock and Ricay's level on quiet Saturdays due to internationals, cup rounds etc ??? Not waste airtime on West ham who are adequately covered nationally by TV/Radio/Sky,etc.

Let's face it - can you imagine the fuss if the Evening Standard had back page coverage of Man Utd all the time or Capital FM carried live commentary from Old Trafford on the basis of there being thouands of Reds Supporters in London? I bet the W*** H*m whingers would have something to say about that !!!

Well Neil, The saturday before last there was only Conference, FA cup and Ryman matches being played owing to England playing later in the afternoon. BBC Essex decided to cancel their sports program totally.

Those that compare the Echo (a commercial company) with the BBC (owned by the British public) are missing the point. The Echo do it for profit, so they will do the populist thing and we can expect to have little influence over them apart from not buying. BBC Essex on the other hand have the responsibility to serve the people of Essex with local news including aspects of minority interest, its what sets them apart from every other radio station around. So yes we need the local stuff to be balanced with entertainment and non-local content or the station would get quite heavy and very few would listen in.

The point of MOB's Thread here and on other club forums, is the station should be focusing on whats happening in this county not on West Ham or for that matter Dagenham.

I'd imagine the sports section at BBC Essex would be the first to rue the fact the county has an unusually large number of senior clubs and they only have a limited amount of airtime to share about, this is fair enough but why when the opportunity does present itself, re: the saturday before last, they go and take the afternoon off? Its clear from their actions, they see themselves as direct competitors to Essex FM and while their format is totally different they still chase ratings to the detriment of the community.

BBC Essex have responded to my suggestion for a boycott. Their is response is long and boring and in my opinion factually incorrect so in the best traditions of the BBC I am going to serialise it.

Episode 1

"Half their season ticket holders have Essex addresses, there are supporters clubs in Clacton and Braintree and there's at least one shop in the county, at Lakeside".

OK then feature Man Utd as the same goes for them.

Episode 2 Coming soon.
