Injury time

BOROMAN

Recommended Posts

Sorry for posting a message not related to Matthew Oliver but here goes:

In recent games Romford have played 10 and 12 minutes respectively of injury time. Ok there were a couple of injuries, odd other incident, but only the type of thing that would give you about 4/5 mins extra in the Premier League.

The situation was the same last time we played in this league, are the ref's under different instructions?

The referee at the Bowers game was inexperienced and seemed to be easily intimidated taking too much notice of Bowers bench and taking no action over a minor pitch invasion by a person who was presumably the Bowers manager. I felt that he was so confused that he lost track of how much time should be added and also had a habit of blowing his whistle more than once to restart the game. At the final whistle both players and spectators were equally confused.

Seems that the "extras" only applies to the second half. At Bowers on Saturday, there were no first half stoppages at all. Perhaps that's what the ESL ref's do - play ALL of the stoppage time at the end of the game!

It was certainly of concern that the Bowers manager was not "dealt with" by the Ref when he came on to the pitch. If it was to assist with the injured Duncan Grover, he certainly made sure that he had his say with the ref before attending to Duncan. But, again, perhaps that is what happens at Bowers - remember the Essex Senior Cup game where the entire bench was on the pitch near the end!

  • 2 weeks later...

Just to prove that Refs do learn from their mistakes, I was in charge of a Romford game recently where a substantial amount of time was added.

I was concerned that by applying the directives re: time added (u should add time for injuries, goals, cautions, major incidents) I was actually undermining my own credibility as extended time added appears to upset virtually everyone concerned. This can then lead to problems within time added (as was the case on this occasion) which serves to further undermine the Match Officals all round.

I took this up with my mentor (a very senior Referee) who advised me that the max I should add would be around 4/5 mins (as per your observation re: Premiership). He argued that with the exception of a major obvious injury - broken leg, say - it is very difficult to justify long periods of time added whereas a reasonable amount can be easily justified. Rest assured I have taken this on board and no longer apply the directive literally.

I hope this gives an insight as to how Refs thinks and hopefully learn.

It's good to hear a ref saying that he wants to learn.. Thanks for your comments. We should al realise that refs at this level do the job, not for money, but for their love of the game. They do it voluntarily. Yes, giving the ref an ear-bashing during a match is part of the game and Fruitbat's interraction is always good fun but sometimes we do go too far. Have a go at the professional refs by all means. They should get things right, but we should lay off these guys (well just a little).

Thanks for the comments by return and the objective reminder that we do this for 'fun' and certainly not for the money. In addition, most of us do want to progress and to do so have to learn & develop.

The biggest problem with Refereeing is that we do not interact enough (at any level) thereby allowing Players, Managers & Fans to draw their own conclusions - usually wrong - about incidents & issues. This serves to perpetuate an impression of aloofness & seperatism. I for one take every opportunity to try and explain (not justify) my decisions if I am asked. Whether or not those concerned agree with my replies is immaterial to me since I have to apply the laws when all is said and done, but at least I try!

On a similar note, Southend Manor are holding a 'Referee's Seminar' on Monday 18th Nov at Southchurch Park (8.00 PM start) where a panel of referees have agreed to appear to participate in a Q & A style interactive session where issues can be discussed in a controlled format. All are welcome apparently. Details are available from SMFC.

Thanks very been open about this Mr ESL Ref. I think when injury time goes beyond 5 mins in a close game, everyone becomes edgy and sometimes incidents develop on the pitch (as with our game at Woodford), which means the game drags on even further and more people get wound up.

I have to be honest and say if I was a ref I might take a cowards way out, and blow for time just to calm things down.

From my experience, the ref's and their assistants are the ultimate soccer fans. Most of them are extremely knowledgable about the clubs that they officiate at and, let's face it, without them we wouldn't have a game to go to! It is just unfortunate that, occasionally, we get one who thinks that the game is there just for him, rather than the other way around. I think that the bloke at Woodford was an example of that (Wasn't you, ESL Ref, was it? No, coudn't be - you sound far too sensible!).

An obvious & ironic case of double standards methinks!

If a referee applied such double standards I'm sure he would be the first to leap to the attack and criticise.

What with the Urchinettes now the Boronettes (god knows who they are) after me.

I seem to becoming a "non-league" sex symbol. I will be "kiss and telling" in the NPL next week. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/yelrotflmao.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cool_shades.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cool_shades.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cool_shades.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cool_shades.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cool_shades.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cool_shades.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cool_shades.gif" alt="" />
