The push for 1,000 posts

Unfortunately I haven't been able to make that much of a contribution recently what with A-levels and stuff, although I do feel that posts on music seem to get the conversation going more than anything. Therefore, I'm going to go away, listen to some CDs, then think of some 'musical debates' to post on here. BRING IT ONNNNNNNN!!!!!!!

EFM,The Firm,The Voice- I don't have exams yet but for some reason at this time of year teachers decide to put all coursework deadlines in the same week! Still that's over now so I can get on with the really important stuff, like posting on here! By the way all JOHN LENNON FANS, watch BBC 2 at 9pm-just seen an advert for that Great Briton programme they're doing on him.

With regard to the John Lennon thing. I overheard someone say yesterday morning something along the following lines...

Quote:

John Lennon, on the Great Britons programme? What's he ever done? Ooooh, so he wrote a few songs! Big deal!

Ok, he 'only wrote a few songs' but how many great bands ,that we love now, have been influenced by those songs to pick up their instruments and play. Maybe he doesn't deserve to win, but he does deserve to be in the top ten.where was paul Mccartney placed?

And another thing...

Don't you think it's really difficult to evaluate the contribution of The Beatles to British culture through individual members. What I mean is the Beatles collectively did more for the music industry then they did on their own. Yes they made great solo records(some more than others!), but can this be compared to the dynamics they had when all together?

Also, do you think if this poll is conducted in say another 20 years after Harrison's death, he too would be in the running for the top spot(ooohh..so cynical!)?

Chubby's opened up a can of worms there..

Beatles have to be the most influential because they bought in great pop music, fused psychadaelic, blues and indian music. They really broke down so many of the barriers took experimentation to the floor, they took risks but made music so much more accessible.

Now, The Sex Pistols are a different bag, they were part of something without a past and created something out of nothing. There's no doubt they put in something different and dangerous to music. But their influence is just not on the scale.

With The Smiths, a band I am full of admiration for, for their wit, their heartfelt lyrics and musicianship. You couldn't deny their huge influence on Britpop and the fact they are one of the greatest British bands ever, but, I think they won't match the Beatles for Longevity.

I saw the programme last night. John Lennon is a huge legend although I'm not sure he should be in the Top 10 Greatest Britons of all time.

However, he should be Number One in every poll on Most Influential Musicians of all time. Paul McCartney should be number two.

Sex Pistols and The Smiths (who I love) do not come close. Nor do Oasis. Nor do The Stone Roses. They are all great bands who I absolutely adore, but they are not an iota of what The Beatles are.
