Hornchurch 1 Wingate & Finchley 0

A very even game and for once we benefitted perhaps from a little bit of luck as we took a very valuable three points.

Steve Jones went close with a couple of early headed efforts in the first half but Wingate came very close to taking the lead when Dean Williams latched on to a long diagonal pass and jabbed the ball past Paul Wood only to see the ball come back off a post and cleared by Kevin Jopson. Our goal came in the last couple of minutes of the first half. Gavin McGowan sent a ball down the right flank where Jones collected and centred. A diving header from Barrie Fox came back off the base of the post and Danny Benstock was there to clean up Video clip

The second half saw us raise our game slightly but Wingate still had a fair slice of the game but didn't really look like scoring. They nearly scored at the wrong end in the last 10 minutes when an attempted clearance shaved the post. It could have been worse for Wingate in injury time when an awful back pass found Joe Narty all alone in the penalty area but with his back to goal, and was unable to outwit the keeper with his turn.

Line-up:Wood, McGowan, Kimble, Gooding, Jopson, Marsden (Carter 72), Fox (Locke 74), Cowley, Jones, Cripps (Nartey 90+), Benstock. Subs not used:-Martin, Kharine.

we controlled the game throughout but why oh why do we have to go through these short spells where we insist on giving the ball away when we are not under any pressure at all, its bad enough watching west ham do it.!

Thought we should have made it a much more comfortable win, they went close first half and thankfully their forward line wasn't the greatest you'll ever come across. Should have really finished them off second half, but good to see Lockey back!

it was bloody cold on the riverside last night but still a good turn out for the boys, over 200 i believe,, and a good three points.

time to bring martin back as well, Crippsys great but i think he struggles in a full game and has nowhere near the impact he has as a sub, we all were looking forward to seeing the new lad nartey as well, only on for a few minutes but looked mighty impresssive, we do need more pace. Overall I thought we were off colour but well done, a win is all that matters on the night.

it took him by surprise I think, his best option would have been to roll it back to jonah who was right behind him, in fairness to him, he was only on for a couple of minutes, i agree though, he looks lethally quick

Not time to bring Taff back yet, because he needs to be hungry to get back in the team and Crippsy was man of the match last night by a street. The person who should be dropped is still Gav although he had his best 30 minutes in the second half since his debut, still looks lazy and lethargic and Carter is a better player.

Find it strange though that Taff isn't even getting a run out from the bench! Would have thought that he would have come on last night. To be honest, I wonder if Taff is a better midfielder than an out and out striker? I watched him during the first half of the Harlow game the other week and some of his touches, movement and passes were superb. Obviously though, as a striker, you open yourself to some scrutiny if you fail to find the back of the net on a regular basis.

As for the criticism of Gav, I personally don't understand it, the guy is so classy down that right hand side, ok, maybe at times he does appear a little off the pace (not that I think that though), but can we really drop one of the best players in the team? I think not.

I Agree JFC Gavin is One of the best players in the team at least whenever he has the ball he looks like doing something with it !

Plus i must say i reckon Crippsy is good enough for ninety minutes except when we play him long balls <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />
