This is worrying. Last week I agreed with pabird on something, yesterday I was as one with Happy on something else, and now I find myself agreeing wholeheartedly with CANV. I need a good read of Socialist Worker to calm myself I think.

Religion is the biggest con trick and load of old blocks ever invented. I mean to say, are you really telling me that there's a supreme being sitting around somewhere doing whatever supreme beings do, but gets really upset if Tesco opens after 5pm on a Sunday? Or if the pub stays open till 11?

What annoys me (some things do, you'll be astonished to learn) is that I'm expected to "respect" other people's religions. Why? I have no respect for it. I may, or not, respect the individual in question, but why should I go all po-faced and solemn about their beliefs in myths, legends and superstition? No sir/madam, you are a t1t, I cry! Cease this wailing at the moon and wearing funny hats, or whatever it is you do, and get a life of your own!

The problem is that, although the victims of the bombings believed in at least two different religions, Spain is formally a Catholic country, and such a memorial service at state level is necessarily a Catholic service.

It underlines how important it is that the Christian religion does not get mentioned in the EU constitution. Such a mention would give the Christians fist class citizenship of Europe, whereas the many atheists, Muslims, Jews and members of other religions would be left with second class citizenship.

My view is that until you have actually looked into religion properly then you cannot have a balanced view. I am a Christian and, as such, I have to belive that all other religions are wrong. Without wanting to sound as though I am preaching, here's a few facts. Invis stated that religion was all down to superstition etc... Wrong, Jesus existed and that is a fact, it is well documented that he existed as is his crucifixtion. The gospels were written soon after his death and are based on the accounts of a large number of people.

Another thing that separates Christianity from every other major religion is that it it he only religion where the barrier between our world and God has been penetrated by the birth of his son, his death, resurredtion and ascention. Mohammed was a normal human as was Gautama Buddha etc

Just a couple of final points. We should stop blaming religion on acts of evil and bigotry. It is human beings who use religion in this way and most practicing theists and decent and law abiding folk. and finally...one more fact. this is that on average, people who follow a religion actually live longer than thiose who don't.

Right, preaching over and back to work!

mind you tho that pretty much proves what relegion is.. something to stop scared people beig extra scared.. surely there are drugs for that kind of thing now..?

Two well known soundbites from a once-popular atheist.

[color:"red"] " You have nothing to lose but your chains"
&
"Religion is the opium of the masses"

And another from someone no less profound...

[color:"red"] "Keep you doped with religion, sex and TV
And you think your so clever and classless and free
But you're still fking peasants as far as I can see"

all valid points there Mr H. but maybe this jesus fella was just some geezer on the blag..? everyone knows how a good story can escalate down the pub.. and tho you can distance organised relgion from the wars that have covered a lot of europe and most of the middle east (if u want) a lot of these loons all base their actions on religion..

now i can understand my mother (bless her) being and wanting my kids to be bought up R.C. .. i was, and where she lived on the west coast of ireland i would imagine a substantial amount of pressure was applied to conform from a very young age.. but thats the middle of nowhere in the 40's n 50's and pre daily papers out there never mind t.v. you believe what your told... surely its only a matter of time before this sybolism is seen to be an emotional crutch and no more.. ? surely this, at last, is the century of einstien and newton.. cold hard facts not storys

I was brought up to follow my own path and I only found it by reading, listening and forming a balanced view. Religion does contain some cold, hard facts if people would just seek to find them. People say that we can now explaain many things that have previuosly been put down to superstition, religion etc. However, where did this science come from in the first place. In addition, there are still things that occur to day that csience cannot explain.

As you go on to say, so did Mohammed and Buddha. What does that prove?

Yes, all thre existed. However, as I stated, Jesus is the only one to have come from a god and gone back to a god, thus opening up a direct link between our world as we know it to God. I accept that this means that faith then comes into the equation. However, all religions require faith, otherwise they would not be religions.

Come on, some of these comments are getting silly in what is supposed to be a sensible debate.

Don't take the mick, just remember, religion (of all types) is an important part in the lives of many many good people. as I have already stated, it has also been proved that practicing religion does lengthen your life (unless you're a suicide bomber of course...........Oops now I'm getting silly!)

I promise I am not taking the mick from sincere believing people but how come sincere high ranking close to their god people excused the Nazi regime (The Pope at the time), hid and no doubt continue to hide vile perpetrators of crimes against children etc etc

Your god-Jesus who yes did live is reputed to have said "bring your children to me" and yet your modern day church continues to make excuses for pedophiles and even moves them to a change of district rather than hand them over to the police

If these are people of the faith you can have have it
