The web site

From Saturday, our esteemed webmaster will be on his hols, so you will have to put up with muggins here updating the site. As you may know, I don't live in Enfield, and during the week I am stuck at Olympia, so you will have to bear with me as far as updates go.

In response to a comment that the site isn't "high tech" enough, there should be a techno upgrade to the site while Neil is off enjoying himself. I have warned him, so hopefully he will remember when he gets back that the the web pages will no longer be as he left them! I was just going to do this so it would work in browsers which try to be industry standard, because that would be really simple and I would get the benefit, but as most of you lot use Internet Explorer (which, being Microsoft, isn't industry standard and doesn't even try to be), I have decided to be kind and make sure that you all do as well! It was tempting not to. Hopefully this will be seen as making the ETFC site more of a shop window for our visitors, even though nearly all of them already follow the club, wouldn't dream of doing so because they're still following the old lot, or are supporters of clubs we are playing against and aren't likely to change. See how good we are to you?

By the way, this update requires every single page on the site to be updated. If I miss one, tough.

1. Neil is on holiday from Saturday.
2. I don't live in the Borough of Enfield and it takes me longer to get home (especially if I go via The Picture Palace) than Neil. With the buses being the way they are, it once took me more time to get to Brimsdown from home than it did to get to Glasgow. Part of this is down to the extra congestion caused by some idiot knocking down a perfectly good football ground and sticking a load of houses, some restaurants and a cinema on the site.
3. I work in Kensington, near Olympia and it takes time for me to get home in the evenings.
4. The web site might not get updated as quickly while Neil is away as when he is here.
5. If you complain, tough. Will it bother me? Not a jot. Both Neil and I are volunteers at this. But I reserve the right to appear obtuse in carrying out somebody's request.

The bit about the "high-tech" complaint comes from the ESL forum. There was a comment that the web site is our shop window to the world, which completely ignored the fact that most of the rest of the world couldn't care less and that those of our visitors who don't already follow the club aren't going to change their allegiance to ETFC just because we have a pretty web site. I was also pointing out that I could quite easily have added a techie upgrade to the site which would probably not have been of any advantage to the person who made the original comment because the chances are that he uses Internet Explorer. But I don't (except to test my web pages to make sure they work). However, I realised that there are some "feature-light" browsers out there such as Epiphany and, if it's still going, Galeon which don't support the enhancement I am going to make. I didn't want users of those browsers to miss out because of a fit of "I hate Microsoft" pique from me. As a consequence, Internet Explorer users will also get the benefit of the enhancement.

Go for it, Cyclops

I am 100% behind you.

Please make it simple for dummies like me.

If you are one of those people who has bought a computer running Windows with all the software already loaded, switches it on and uses it without ever having made any adjustments to Internet Explorer, it will work.

However, we have a lot of pages in our web space and I have to update as many of them as possible before uploading everything, in order to maintain a consistent look across the site. This will take time, but I have been able to make a start on it.

i wouldnt mind another holiday!

see cyclops, wasnt that easier to say:
JNR
think it means
* Neil is on holiday
* Cyclops is doing web site
* there will be some changes

But, as I have pointed out, I reserve the right to be obtuse. I was also pointing out my low opinion of Internet Explorer.

And I was pointing out that using the latest technology on a website for a club at Level 5 in the Pyramid probably isn't worth the effort unless the webmaster gets the benefit of it.

OK folks. I have now done the update and uploaded most of the revised pages.

The upgrade implements alternate style sheets. The main reason for doing this is that I wasn't too keen on Neil's grey settings but it also gave me the chance to put in a high contrast style for visually impaired visitors. If you have javascript enabled, the menu will have new pages styles available. If you have cookies enabled, your choice will carry over to other pages within the site.

I also tried this out in Konqueror (a Linux browser which properly supports alternate style sheets) with javascript and cookies disabled. Although I had to change the style from within the "View" menu, it still worked and the preferences carried over.

Excellent stuff, oh one-eyed one.

I thought I was going mad with the grey text! The "blue contrast" option seems to take it back to how it was before. We like - we like - we like!

Any chance of a "blue contrast - large" so that browsing at 1024 x 768 on a 15" CRT is more readable, please? <img src="/images/graemlins/bigshock.gif" alt="" />

Cheers

NO! Sorry about that but I have just updated I don't know how many web pages and to add an extra style would mean updating them all again. It wouldn't be anywhere near as bad this time because I was also going through sorting out those little anomalies which grow with the web space (such as the in-line style commands which are nearly all now held on the external style sheets).

Oh all right, possibly... I will have a word with Neil when he comes back. The reason for the text being as it is (it is resizeable though) is so that it is the same size and type face as the grey version, 'cos I thought it looks rather good when you change the style and all that appears to change is the colour of the text and/or the badge appearing on or disappearing from the page.

To resize the text, I think you use the "View" menu in Internet Explorer (I'm currently using Mozilla in Linux). In other browsers it is probably the same as Mozilla (i.e. "Ctrl" and "+" to increase, "Ctrl" and "-" to decrease).
