Match report Maldon

While we are waiting, my views!! (ignore if you wish)

It was a strange day today, with injuries etc we just did not seem up for it!

There were a few that worked hard, I am afraid the same few!!

There were a few that let themselves down, they just seemed to lack Uumphh! (I know its not a word but you know what I mean).

We have in my view two of the best defenders in the league and two in need of serious development, they have got to look at Kreyling and learn from him!!

Leon looked lonely up front, he was not good but then he worked hard and did not get the delivery!

The big problems today were three!!

1 Played far to deep invited an average team on!!!

2 Midfield Stuart and Jay are just not at this level!! Lee Jay is good but for a skinny fella he does not move enough, he is definetly not aggressive enough!!

3 We have got to win the ball at corners!!

To me the team that finished the game should have started with the exception of Batch, I would have played him instead of Stuart!!

A small positive our keeper played well despite the score, he is one of the few that seems to learn from his errors!!

I didn't bother watching the last 20 minutes. Found consolation in the bar.

Oomph, MOB.

I think you're right on the whole. I missed the reading of the team over the PA so I was confused for a while as to who was actually playing up front. I'm not blaming Leon, but we might as well have played with no strikers for all the good it did us.

a truely terrible performance with no good coming from it at all. we cant play with one up front, even if everyone is injured put a midfield player up there. it was stupid. on the odd ocasion we did manage to get behind the defencen there was no one in the box to except a cross and we lost possesion. we were copmpletely outplayed today. im going through the tapes now and im finding it very hard to find any highlights of Canvey. my 1st highlights video will be mainly Maldon

Maldon played their part yesterday and deserved their win - in fact they had a couple of sitters which I honestly don't know how they missed - could have been 4 or 5.

We had absolutely no bite up front and truely missed the work rate of Curran and Rugg. Leon was covering the pitch but was in effective on his own and when there was support the final ball was poor or there was literally no one in a dangerous position. Playing someone up front like Leon needs support from midfield and we never really gave him that support today.

I saw in the programme yesterday, and I don't know if it's that accurate, that our quickest goal was 21 minutes scored by Corbell at Sudbury. I'm starting to wonder if there is a bit of a trend with us struggling to score and break down opposition defences - we've had a few games now and 21 minutes seems a fair time to be playing.

Defensively I felt Kreyling and Crow did well although the first goal I feel was down to Crow. He seemed to take an extra touch to knock it slightly wide of the Maldon player who read it brilliantly mugged the ball off him and put in a simple pass across the front of the goal for the incoming player to bury - who was supposed to be picking up the incoming player? Wiseman has taken a few criticisms lately and seems to have got his [****!!****] together. No wonder he was annoyed at Stuart and Crow for the opener.

The second half change to bring Bourne on seemed to inject a bit more pace but we still had the same problems up front. IMHO I felt we looked more creative and had a better presence up front once Reade came on and finally Parker - not saying they would have changed the result but it did give us a bit more incentive.

John Batch must be fuming after that game and the injuries are not helping him. I still felt Edgar was off the pace due to his previous injury but some don't have that excuse. I hope those players who are grafting don't let their heads drop after another poor result.

Presume Ash will have an oustanding game next week when we play against Great Wakering Rovers

Obviously I didn't see the game yesterday, but if these players are still out for the next fixture I wonder if it would hurt to play Matt Reade up front with Leon in the 'Greggors' role?

I'm sure Lurch...I mean Matt, could do a job of holding the ball up well for Leon/Charlie to run onto.

When I saw the line-up I thought we must've played 4-5-1 and it would appear that even with that we still couldn't create chances. I personally haven't seen Canvey score in open play as far as I remember since the opening day.

Some of our 'fringe' players simply don't seem good enough for this level, but it's all we've got during our season of consolidation. Still, I'm amazed to see Jon Stuart make the starting line-up.

I think by then Maldon had taken their foot off the pedal and allowed us into the game a bit more. Reade did provide more of a precense when he came on.

I cant remember a Canvey team putting in such a woeful performance. We never looked like scoring, and havent for a few matches now, we need a big fairly experienced target-man fast, and the errors at the back continue, you cant give a proven goalscorer at this level chances like yesterday - Keith Martin, three chances - two goals !

Crow was mugged for one goal but more importantly a stronger unit in two areas of activity mugged the team:

1. The opposition had a reasonably simple game plan and all their players kept the team shape for 90 minutes.

2. Player for player they were physically stronger and brushed several members of our team aside throughout the game.

We do have a strong nucleus for going forward but to make earlier progress we need strength and pace up front and a strong play maker alongside Dobbo in mid-field.

We did look better and had chances to penetrate with the left side attacking substitution.

I tell you what we look like we need.

Not new players, not a new coach and not more people showing encouragement.

We need some of the players to actually give a sh*t that they're representing Canvey Island football club. From the sidelines its blatant to see this whole season who really goes the extra mile. Some players look like they're playing local pub football. Lets not hide behind any rose tinted glasses and start facing facts.

I'm not sure if I agree. Certainly there are some players who aren't as capable as others, or aren't trying as hard, but I don't necessarily think there are players who don't care.

Not trying hard/Not caring = the same thing in essence.

I appreciate what your saying Benny - but at this moment I don't agree with you.

As Ribbit says I think all the lads are trying - but there is a big gulf in some of the talent at this level. I think all the lads try and want to play but some seem to be struggling with the levels and demands of this league - they just may not be up to it in the long run.

At the moment we are going to have to trust them to put in the hard work and turn it around as I can't see many experienced heads coming into the team at the moment.........

thanks for a common sense post mouse. i think all the lads are trying to do their best. we were not the only ones who started the season with plenty of enthusiasm. it must be very difficult to work your bollox off and get nothing out of it,only for some fans to say that "you don't care".

every week we come up against men who are older stronger and much more experienced.

my hope for this season was:

1st. to stay up

2nd. to build on what we have for next season.

i believe that will happen.

At last a thread on football!

I think PABird sums it up well. A lot of the players did very well in the reserves last year and perhaps expected much the same this year.

However, we are coming up against more experienced and physically stronger teams who don't let us play pretty football.

To cope with this, we must at the very least maintain our shape, which we haven't being doing, and play a stable side when injuries permit.
