Carrying on...

From Martin's post about stangers having heard of us, I did a quick look back at the 1997/98 season when we did so well only to get screwed at the end, and to see how well every team we played in the major competitions (League, FA Cup, Trophy) that season had fared... and it is quite depressing really.

Out of the 29 different teams we played:

5 are in higher divisions now than then: Cardiff, Cheltenham, Hereford, Morecambe and Yeovil

6 are in the same position now: Halifax, Rushden & Diamonds, Kidderminster Harriers all had spells in the football league; Stevenage Borough, W***** and Northwich Victoria (Conference North Champions this season)

7 are one step lower than they were before: Boreham Wood, Hayes & Yeading, Southport, Stalybridge Celtic, AFC Telford, Welling United & Tilbury

The rest: ourselves, Dover Athletic, Farnborough Town, Gateshead, Hednesford Town, Kingstonian, Leek Town, Walton & Hersham and Baldock Town are all considerably lower though Dover have been promoted back to the Ryman Premier, Farnborough are top of our division, and Gateshead in the top six of the Northern Premier.

So it's not that depressing that we may have the biggest fall of all is it?

Well exactly. The biggest counterpoint has to be Cardiff. Ten seasons ago we gave them two bloody good games in the FA Cup and now they play in the Final and we may be about to enter the Vase for the first time ever. Depressing.

You have not had the biggest fall... Baldock Town now play in Herts Senior County League - division 1 (four divisions below Southern League Div 1)
