Take a look at either "The Sibley Guide to Birds" by David Sibley or "National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America" by Jon L Dunn & Jonathan Alderfer, currently the 5th edition.

 

In my opinion these are the best two available for North America. They both also come in cut down Eastern or Western versions. Given your location you would be fine with the Western version of either.
