CG1984 - Well as a starter for ten here is Tokyngton Manor's match report from last Saturday, were you at the game:

Saturday 21 March 2009

Molten Spartan South Midlands League Division 1

Crawley Green 1 Tokyngton Manor 2

Manor put two successive home defeats, to high flying Bedford Town Reserves and Hatfield Town, behind them in fine style by beating Crawley Green in a game played at Barton Rovers home in rural Bedfordshire.

The afternoon's proceedings started brightly with Manor looking lively however disaster struck almost immediately when after just five minutes Chris Ellis was adjudged to have tripped an attacker in the penalty area and Referee Mr Scott pointed to the spot. Crawley Green's prolific Robbie O'Dell stepped up to the mark only to see his kick brilliantly saved by Manor keeper Meshack Spooner down to his right and the ball tipped round the post for a corner. The home side looked shaken by the missed opportunity to take an early lead and Manor capitalised with a number of promising forays into their half without really testing keeper Drummond.

On the half hour mark, with the honours very much even, Manor took the lead when Jessie Reynolds collected the ball out on the left and sent a delicious looping shot over the keeper into the far top corner of the net, the lead certainly didn't flatter Manor who had rolled up their sleeves from the outset determined to make the long trip to Bedfordshire worthwhile.

On forty minutes Manor extended their lead when the lively Reynolds again collected the ball, this time in space in a central position outside the Crawley Green area, and stayed as cool as a cucumber as he rolled it past the onrushing keeper into an empty net. The half ended with Manor taking a commanding lead into the dressing room and for a well earned pat on the back from delighted Manager Matt Oliver.

Manor started the second period like a house on fire and raced out of the traps creating a number of opportunities to extend their lead even further. It was Crawley Green however who pulled a goal back close to the hour mark when a rare lapse in Manor's defence allowed James Potter to steer the ball past a disappointed Spooner who had stayed as solid as a rock all afternoon.

The goal gave the home side impetus and a new lease of life however Manor were determined to stay firm and the defence, marshalled superbly by Captain Tim Maynard, did not allow Spooner to be troubled unduly.

The game had been played in good spirit however boiled over towards the end when tempers frayed and Referee Scott brandished a yellow card to a player from each side, Manor were delighted to hear the final whistle and the three points were well deserved.

The games continue to come thick and fast and Manor face bottom of the table Brache Sparta at the Viking Sports Ground on Tuesday evening followed by a long trip to Buckinghamshire on Saturday to face Buckingham Athletic.

Yes i was at the game. Definately a different game to the 7-1 reverse at the start of the season!

I thought Tokynton Manor were just a bit too strong physically for Crawley on the day and deserved their win. Too many of our more experienced players missing at the moment and it is costing us dear and a injury list running in to double figures. Could have been a different game if the penalty was converted but justice was done as it clearly was not a penalty.

  • 1 year later...

Could Crawley Green be in for a successful season taking into account their amazing 6-1 victory at Dunstable Town on Saturday, I assume the prolific Robbie O'Dell is still with the Club.

Or maybe Dunstable Town are in for an awful season

I wouldn't read much into that result, we had our bar manager in goal as our keeper was on holiday and the chap who stood in for a couple of friendlies was celebrating his birthday. There were only two saves all game and he managed to get lobbed on his line. Thankfully our 500 appearance, 12 year veteran Paul Taylor will be back between the sticks today.

We drew 0-0 with Barton with a weaker side, aside from in goal, that we put out against Crawley.

Crawley Green's hard fought scoreless draw at Cotlandswick on Saturday was the result of the day for me, London Colney would have been hell bent on hitting the ground running after their huge disappointment of last season but it would appear from the report that Crawley Green were by far the better side:
