Ladies off to a decent start

Just an update on the ladies team front...

We started our pre-season matches yesterday against Chertsey Town Ladies (previously Knaphill) with an encouraging 3-0 victory thanks to goals from Tash Lodder, Sam McFeely and Terri Harper.

Lodder gave the Tangerines a first half 1-0 lead when she fired home from close range following some good hold up play by the returning McFeely.  McFeely doubled the lead early in the second half when she stooped to head in at the far post from a corner that evaded everybody else and Harper rounded off the scoring with a smartly taken turn and shot with her left foot.  Ashford really should have scored more and Manager Kate Cook will be looking to work on finishing at training this week!

Next up are Brook House on Sunday which is scheduled on the outside pitch at 10:30, although don't make it a date for your diaries as we've received word that there are now doubts over their availability so we may well be training.

Another update from our latest friendly:

Ashford Town Ladies won their latest pre-season friendly on Sunday when they hosted a very decent team from Brook House.

Despite some good early pressure it was Brook House who took the lead when Charlotte McGregor hauled down one of the determined forwards 25 yards from goal.  The resulting freekick was too hot to handle for makeshift keeper Chloe Russell who managed to get both hands on the ball but was unable to prevent it going in.  Town hit back just a few minutes later when a cross from the right was headed in at the far post by Sam McFeely, her second since returning to the squad.  Town played some excellent passing football on the bumpy surface of the Tangerine’s outside pitch and took the lead just before half time when a shot from Terri Harper wasn’t grasped by the away keeper and Lucy Easton poked home from close-range.

The second half started well for the home side and the lead was extended to 3-1 when Harper threaded a ball in behind the Brook House defence and Easton showed her pace and composure to flick the ball past the keeper and into the net.  Within just a few minutes of the restart Town’s defence looked to play the offside trap but with the assistant referee unmoved, the lively Brook House #9 race from the halfway line through to the second-half keeper Chloe Hetherington and applied a tidy finish.  However Town were not to be caught and as the match drew to a close it was Tash Lodder who fired home the goal of the match when she lashed into the bottom right corner from 15 yards to make it 4-2.

Lots of positives from the match, not least Vicki Walsh and Julie Newell looking at home together in centre mid, Nicole Jacobs continuing to impress under the wing of captain Kate Davies, Chloe Russell and Charlotte McGregor both showing their versatility in unfamiliar positions while Chloe Hetherington had a solid first half at left-back winning numerous challenges.  Terri Harper was again outstanding and with Tash Lodder on the opposite flank the team looked threatening throughout and will hopefully carve out plenty of chances for Lucy Easton and Sam McFeely who renewed their partnership in attack.  It was also good to see our younger players Emma Thorne and Chelsea Imbastari and one or two trialists getting some game time.
With players such as Delphine Thenet, Hannah Smith, Amy Fry, Jo Davis, Karrin French-Wollen, Emma Dobell and Katie Donaldson all due to return to the squad soon and Kate C hoping to attract one or two more before the season gets underway the future is bright, the future is Tangerine!
