Bumper crowd expected as FC United look to seal title

Thousands of FC United of Manchester supporters are hoping to cheer the Reds to the Evo-Stik Premier Division title and promotion to the Conference North on Tuesday night as we host Stourbridge at the Tameside Stadium but a tricky task awaits.

A victory for Karl Marginson’s side over the 16th placed West Midlands club will see the Reds crowned champions, whilst a draw would all but seal the title bar an unlikely 10 goal defeat at second placed Workington in the final game of the season this Saturday. However, a defeat for the Reds will leave them needing at least a point at the weekend, otherwise Workington will steal the title at the death.

The good news is that the visiting Glassboys are on a bad run of form, having won just one of their last 17 games - 1-0 at Ramsbottom on 14th March. The bad ’news’ is that Stourbridge have already beaten FC United this season - 2-1 back on 22nd November at the War Memorial Ground, the only previous meeting between the two clubs.

The result was FC United’s last league defeat for 21 games until the Reds went down 1-0 at Skelmersdale last Tuesday. Thankfully, FC United bounced back with a comfortable 3-1 victory over Stamford on Saturday and should go into this Tuesday’s game feeling confident that they can get the job done.

Speaking about when the two teams met previously, Margy said: “I don’t think we helped ourselves the last time we played Stourbridge. We deserved to lose because of the way we played that day but things are different now.

"The players showed great character and mental strength to bounce back from going a goal behind on Saturday to win quite comfortably in the end. Hopefully, we won’t give Stourbridge a headstart on Tuesday but I always believe that we can score goals."

Margy doesn’t expect to have any fresh injury concerns, so will once again have a few selection dilemmas with players competing for places in the starting XI all over the park. Only goalkeeper Dave Carnell seems assured of getting his name on the teamsheet for his 56th appearance of the season.

FC United of Manchester versus Stourbridge is this Tuesday at the Tameside Stadium with kick-off at 7.45pm. It’s pay on the gate as usual with prices voted for by our members - £8 for adults, £5 concessions and £2 for under-18s. Get yourself to that football ground.
