BRIGHTLINGSEA REGENT 1  HORNCHURCH 1

Hornchurch left Brightlingsea with one point, after being denied a penalty and having a seemingly good goal disallowed, just two of some unusual decisions in an even match.

Brightlingsea’s Josh Gould was making his 250th appearance, and it was the home side who took an early lead, when Lewwis Spence was dispossessed in midfield, and Billy Hunt moved past Alex Bentley, before crossing low into the middle, where Jake Taylor finished off with a powerful shot.

Hornchurch almost levelled four minutes later, when Sean Marks glanced a header from Spence’s free-kick past the far post, and a Brad Warner free kick was a fraction too far ahead of Marks, with Matt Cripps hammering the ball away.

On 17 minutes  George Purcell fell heavily under a challenge from two defenders, but the loud appeals for a penalty were ignored, and three minutes later George Keys was booked for a foul on Bradley Warner, whose well-flighted free kick found Jordan Clark, before the ball was scrambled away.

On 22 minutes Sean Marks lobbed the ball over James Bradbrook in the home goal, but the ball hit the post and went out for a goal kick. Pressure mounted on the home defence, with Marks prominent, and Hornchurch almost found a way through when George Saunders played the ball in from the right which Marks stabbed goalwards, but it was parried away by Bradbrook and went out for a corner via a defender.

Nathan Cooper and Connor Hogan both went close, and, two minutes before the interval, Purcell ran on to a George Saunders pass, and his hard shot looked like going into the net until it hit Marks on the back.

On the stroke of half time Saunders sped down the right, and pulled the ball back to Purcell, whose hard shot crashed into the net, a fraction after the whistle had blown for a somewhat questionable offside, as Purcell was behind the ball when it was crossed.

Within seconds of the restart, Purcell crossed from the left and although Marks dived to head the ball, it lacked power and Bradbrook saved.

Brightlingsea replied when a Terry Amoss header skimmed g the bar, and shortly afterwards Spence was booked for a foul on Jake Closeley.

Both Purcell and Hogan went close as Hornchurch came forward, now finding gaps in the home defence, and a Saunders cross just eluded Hogan in front of goal. Back at the other end both Hunt and Turner went close, but the pressure was mounting and when a home clearance was played back upfield, Purcell flicked on to Brad Warner who ran forward and fired in an unstoppable shot, to the massed delight of the away following behind the goal.

Warner was perhaps harshly booked for a mistimed tackle, whilst a dreadful challenge on Bentley went unpunished, as did two successive fouls on Cooper.

Leon McKenzie came on for Marks, and Theo Fairweather-Johnson replaced the impressive Saunders, but Hornchurch were unable to find a way through in the remaining few minutes.
