The Club's know each other inside out, and what they had for breakfast, but Bovingdon should progress to the Second Round of the competition:

Jets 2 Levy Green 2

Levy should have wrapped this up in the first half, when the home side were completely abject. They went in 2-0 up, the second of which (and I am so bored of typing this) was yet another defensive howler. Every schoolkid knows you never play the ball across the edge of your own box when attackers are around, but apparently members of the Jets defence bunked off that day because that's exactly what they did, allowing the Levy player free rein to intercept with keeper Brad 'Grobelaar' Shaw once more out of position for an easy second.

Things didn't look like changing until midway through the second period, when Kristian Swaby and later Nathan Page came on, both netting to rescue a point in what was a great last 20 minutes for the hosts. Much needed too as it had looked for all the world like it would be 6 defeats from 7, and this draw feels like a win with Page's equaliser coming on 90 minutes.

Decided to approach this one via bus from the vibrant town of Hitchin, after consuming breakfast at the Wetherspoons with a Mad Squirrel London Porter, and visiting the well stocked Beer Shop for the cask offering from Burnt Mill and a Double IPA with the interesting name of Kissing Trains.
The town of Shefford seems pleasant enough, as is its location, with a decent bus service to and from Bedford or Hitchin via Arlesey.
The ground is a few minutes walk from the bus stop and is one for good weather as it is quite open with a small seated stand and a terraced version. There is however a decent grass bank to view from on two other sides. The lack of a programme, either online or printed, was disappointing.
Game had some decent spells in the first half, the away side scoring immediately after Shefford missed a golden opportunity at the other end, only to then relinquish the lead by conceding a penalty before half time. The second half was disrupted by an injury to a home player who after nearly 10 mins treatment was assisted off to be transported by car for further medical help presumably. The rest of the match passed by slowly and contained a couple more goals for Shefford.
With a little time to spare before the bus back to Arlesey Station, I decided to check out the B&T Brewery Tap where locals were engrossed in that game with the oval ball which seemed even less exciting the encounter I had witnessed earlier. The Vale Brewery, Gravitas, was very enjoyable as always and preferable to the very basic limited offering from the resident brewery.

Division Two
Berkhamsted Raiders 2 Eynesbury United 3

Eynesbury United's version of events:

Spartan South Midlands League Division 2
Berkhamstead Raiders (2) 2 Eynesbury United (1) 3
The Bulls travelled for this important SSML Division 2 game with no more than 6 of their squad unavailable due to injury, suspension and unavailability, and gave debuts to Sam Carter in goal and striker Aidan Vaughan.
The Bulls arrived at the impressive Orbital Fasteners Stadium knowing only a win would keep any aspirations in the league alive, and started at a lively tempo moving the ball around and on 5 minutes Sam Piesse got in behind the Raiders right back and put in a great centre but Vaughan just could not stretch enough to get to the ball. The Bulls kept pushing and on 18 minutes Baxter was fouled 25 yards out, Owen Dixon stepped up in his new shiny boots and sent a left footed shot over the wall and into the bottom corner. A deserved lead, but Raiders upped their game and when a Bulls attack broke down they quickly counter attacked and started to cause issues. On 28 minutes Raiders were awarded a free kick which Carter saved but the striker was there to tap home the rebound. On 33 minutes the turnaround was complete when Raiders 16 year old debutant Ozcan skipped past a couple of United players and rifled a 25 yard effort past Carter.
The Bulls driven on by Neil Morris continued to play good football but the ball in the final third let them down.
One down at the break United came out with some purpose and tried to get on the front foot, but we’re continually frustrated by the home team slowing the game down (well within the laws of the game I must add) and taking their time with goal kicks, throw ins etc, and who can blame them when they are ahead. To be fair it was always going to take something scrappy to break the young side down and on 78 minutes a corner from Owen Dixon was turned home by Ryan Baxter, though the evergreen Morris claimed he had touched it last, though we can’t find anyone to collaborate that fact.
United now started to drive Raiders back with Morris getting United up the pitch, and on 84 minutes a great ball from Piesse found Baxter who raced clear and slotted the ball past Parker to give United the lead.
Now it was United’s time to implement the slowing down of the game and this they did to manage the game and pick up three big points.
A poor game to watch but we kept at it and just about deserved the win, on to a cup Quarter Final next week against league leaders Old Bradwell at home next Saturday, but a good three points and on we go.
