On the topic of old players , anyone remember a Bob Stead.

He was a local league player , but is claiming he represented the Fleet. It would have been early to mid 80's .

I can't remember him and think he is joshing me. Anyone have any recollections ?

Melvin Ellingham was one of three sons(the others Tony and Ray) of a Fleet doirector in the 60s, Fred Ellingham. He used to travel with his dad to Fleet away games, and as legend goes, was with the team aty Wisbech one night with the Fleet reduced to ten men before kick off. Step forward young Melvin for a one and only Fleet appearance.

 

Since then, the former staunch Halfwayliner, had a spell as a butcher in Egypt(?????) before turning up as a lifeloing fan of the Git.

Wasn't me.....I joined after the first season......having played as a "ringer" ( don't tell Bill Baldwin !!) in the last game of the first season !! (1976 ?).....having been introduced by the great Bill Lunn !! ...Still...I lasted for 24 seasons...give or take a few months for broken limbs !!

 

ahhhh happy days !!

 

That's it from me.....off to wallow in the past and to have 10 pints of the apple juice !!

 

Good luck to team and those who are travelling to the game tomorrow......
