Enfield Town 2 Hullbridge Sports 0

Eastway Essex Senior League

Town took their time to wrap up the points against the bottom club. In a generally poor game, the hosts failed to really perform until the last quarter.

In an utterly forgettable first half, they hardly troubled a well-organised Hullbridge defence, but, once a moment of madness had given them a penalty, they settled to control the game.

The first half had hardly anything of note, as Town struggled to create a threat and Hullbridge, though well organised, showed an understandable lack of ambition, as they looked to add to their two-point tally for the season.

Graeme Hall missed an early header and Rudi Hall came close to catching out Adam Seal in the Hullbridge goal, as he sent in a long ball from the wing.

A scramble on 38 minutes almost produced dividends, but no-one could get a clear strike on goal and David Allen eventually headed wide.

The second half started well for Hullbridge, but Rudi Hall was unlucky at the other end when his shot went just over from 30 yards.

Despite their strong start, the visitors never really looked like scoring, and it all went wrong for them in the 57th minute when an Allen overhead kick was saved by a hand with the keeper beaten. The offender was shown a straight red card and Rudi Hall dispatched the penalty. Seven minutes later, the game was sealed when Matt Negus played a corner to Rudi Hall on the edge of the box, and his flick over the crowded goalmouth was forced home by Dean Green. Town now, at last, began to settle and began playing the ball around.

With ten minutes to go Lee Smith hooked a shot wide, and Seal then plucked the ball off Smith's head as he tried to get to an Allen cross.

Negus also had chances, but could not beat the keeper.

Smith hit the foot of the post late on and Sebastian Ndombe struck the bar from the rebound.

Negus had the final effort, but was denied by another fine save.
