Hornchurch 1 Southend United 2

We saw a good game of football tonight marred slightly towards the end by two sendings off.

The first half ended goalless with the game being about even, but Southend took the lead 10 minutes into the second half through a Phil Whelan header. Steve Jones hit the post from a free-kick in the 62nd minute but levelled the scores 7 minutes later from the penalty spot after a defender handled the ball in the 6 yard area. Southend's Stuart Thurgood was sent of a minute before the end in an off the ball incident and almost immediately Southend scored the winner with Mark Salter following up a shot which Kharine could not hold. There were strong claims for offside with Gavin McGowan receiving his marching orders for protesting a little too strongly for the referee's liking.

Line-up:- Kharine, McGowan, Bates, Carter, Jopson, Marsden, Locke, Cowley, Jones, Martin (Stowe 64), Benstock. Subs not used: Elder, Price, Wood.

Yep, I agree with that, SUFC had the edge but the game was there to be won, Chrissie Stowe showed his worth when coming on, he scored a great goal Saturday

Steve Carter played well on his comeback from injury, Lockie is really proving himself now, Danny C always gets stuck in.

I could mention many others but lads keep going, the Riverside are behind you!

I should never have bloody well registered on this thing, it won't let me in without the password which I keep losing...anyway, agree entirely with the above, good team came down tonite and played well, probably with the edge technically but marginal, first half decisions went against us, dissallowed goal, last man took jonah out and got away with it, back pass inside the area went unnoticed..having said all of that the Russian acrobat saved our bacon three times, honours about even..second half, marginally theirs, strange double sending off, probably could have been avoided...but...good game...we played well...good individual performances, carter was excellent again, as was Lockie and Cowley, McGowan was superb (chrissie pressie idea...a muzzle!!!!) Dmitri made outstanding saves, could he have held the last minute shot that led to the winner?... it was deflected, who cares, the whole team played well and they were great guests..... the supporters, both sets were superb, not often that I go home feeling reasonably good about losing, take a lot from tonite onwards towards saturday lads...well done to everyone...a good nite at the old stadium...see you saturday... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cool_shades.gif" alt="" />

calling all urchins

i'm doing a piece on hornchurch and kharine for one of the UK's leading footy mags. i've been down to the club to interview mick marsden and dmitri already, and was at tonight's game against southend (you were unlucky not to get something i feel)... anyway to cut to the chase - i'd like to get a fan's eye view, not just on kharine, but on the way the club seems to be moving forward. anyone willing to enter into a brief correspondence with me on this - could they email me at danski@totalise.co.uk

hope to hear from you

dan

Not that bothered about the result, we have a bigger and more important match on Saturday, but losing Gav for probably a good few games is a big blow. Sorry, but regardless of whether the goal was offside or not, a player of Gav's standard should act in a far more responsible manner. Anyway, I thought to the Southend supporters were a decent bunch, a pleasent change from the jealous inbreds that usually follow away sides over there!

agree my Lord but lets not get into Gav, your rite, he should know better and he'll have to learn the hard way, its his loss again cos crippsy is more than up to the job of covering for him (i think that Crippsy is made for that right wing back position) Gav will be down today so lets cheer him up and put it behind us, we played as good as we have all year and we were, a bit unlucky.....having said that, take nothing from the visitors, supporters as well...... bloody great night at the Stadium, thats what this has all been about, nights like that and many more of them...

Unlucky boys, thought you looked quite a reasonable outfit, matching us in fitness terms (although read in your programme that they train 4 times a week) but i just feel we had the edge which is what you would expect.

I had a brilliant time last night, it was great to drink beer whilst watching the game as well, and the burgers were fantastic. I thought it was hilarious when we came and stood in the centre of your stand and enjoyed a bit of banter. I dont think the kids knew what was going on - 2 sets of supporters getting along with each other for a change. Oh well best of luck for the rest of the season.

Yep - good night out and thanks for the hospitality! Your catering certainly showed ours up - the burgers were excellent - and your fans are a decent bunch, although we couldn't quite work out the reasoning behind the "seaside rejects" chant! Anyway, good luck for the rest of the season and maybe we'll meet again soon in the near future.
