Trial Video Clip

Persuaded my Head of Dept at work (me) that we needed a new digital camera with video clip facility & that I should get plenty of practice with it so I could teach others how to use it properly.

Tried it out at yesterday's game. Had my usual problem with the goal - missed it by a mile. However, I think you can see from this clip that the quality is excellent - even on full screen. All I need now is to dose myself with Mogadon before each match & make sure nobody else has the camera booked out at weekends.

Unfortunately the improvement in quality was completely lost when I uploaded to Youtube & Google. Therefore, you'll have to wait for the file to download from my webspace.

For what it's worth, I think we need to play a rather different game against the likes of Stafford & Kidderminster. Keep secure possession, playing a lower tempo game than our usual one. Make them work, chasing us down. Wear them out gradually & drag them about. Be patient. When their shape goes, hit them hard with pace from Keeling or Sodje. Probably about as sound as my ability to capture a Fleet goal on video, but there you go.

Does GNFC not hold with the recording media rules that most other Conference clubs apply. I.e no cameras or video cameras are allowed in the ground then? Mind you if I turn up with my Nikon D200 with 400mm lens I probably get lynched by the press boys!

Er....lets not get too carried away with ourselves here......who is going to stop anyone taking a photo or video or mobile phone clip ? We would need nearly as many stewards as there were punters ! Don't forget, this is Conference footie, not Premiership !

Cheers,

The ban is there to stop people making money out of what is the Conference's to sell, videos & photographs of their games.

If someone were to go into a ground with a professional looking video camera fitted with massive lense, they would probably be stopped - if not by the stewards then the people around them who got fed up with being whacked in the head or having their view obstructed.

Plenty of people take photos & video clips at matches on small digital cameras* & mobile phones & these are posted for other fans to view free of charge on many clubs' websites. Any organization trying to stop this would only make an ass of themselves.

However, perhaps we should never underestimate the petty mindedness of the jobsworth!

* Such as the one I used yesterday

Agree with you on both points Graham-

The quality is much better, really sharp and clear!

And that's a good POV about 'wearing them down'- Kidderminster yesterday were all about running onto the long ball, they weren't a footballing side. If we just slowly wear them down and make sure we don't give the ball away cheaply and concede from a counter-attack, we'll do alot better.

Graham, you are exactly right.

To film matches professionally with a tripod you would have to get permission from the club first, then your name would be on the gate and they would let you up in the gantry (as they did for the BBC Oxford guy the other week).

I have told the club that only TV companies can come up in the gantry with me as there is just not enough room up there for others such as Away club cameramen and supporters doing 'media study projects'.

I have no problem with you posting your clips on YouTube or wherever as long as you don't sell your footage at my expense and the club's expense.
I often have a look at them and it's good to see things from the supporters' angle.
I film for the Team Managers and Conference TV from the best vantage point in the ground, so what you are doing is totally different from that and therefore fine by me.

As it happened, I was unable to film the Kidderminster game on Saturday because I was sitting at home in agony from a tooth infection.
It was too late for me to get another cameraman to fill in for me, so I presume there was nobody up in the gantry on Saturday.

It's very rare that I miss a game, but I could train you up as a stand-in Graham, if it ever happened again !?

Could Conference TV put up with the whoops of joy from Graham when Fleet score?

Good point. Forgot about that.

It's not just the noise though.
Many a time I have filmed from TV gantries where 'supporters' have been up there as cameramen or commentators and jumped up and down when a goal has gone in.

Do you weigh them before you let them up? Wouldn't fancy being in that gantry with some of 'em pogoing up and down...!

The first time I went up in that gantry after it had just been built, I have to admit I was very worried about it collapsing, especially as it was a game where Conference TV were streaming it live and they had both a laptop operator and commentator up there with me in addition to another cameraman who was filming for Sky News.
(Four of us in total).

That's the most we have ever had up there and the gantry has stood the test really well since then.
I have to say well done to whoever built it.
Was it Maurice Cox ?

Mind you, when I get up there to film the next match after Charlton Reserves have been playing, it looks as if Charlton's camera crew have been having a right party up there !

Not sure how the punters at large would take to shots of the sky & insane yells whenever we hit the net, though! However well you trained me, I think I'd always revert to type whenever we looked like scoring from open play.
