Sounds well balanced and sensible but imagine walking back home to the East End as your home, say? Brick Lane especially if your family had lived there for generations but you are being squeezed out

The colourful backdrop takes on a differing complexion

Well, I think you are both right (Pa & Urchino). London has soaked up migrations from Hugenots, Jews, Chinese, Russians & Serbs, etc in the Past. And they have created a rich tapestry of life in the city. But we shouldn't forget that there was social unrest when London periodically received massive migrations from those who lived in the countryside.

What this "Kilroy" issue has stirred is the fact that anyone voicing dissent from "official" Political Correctness is being treated as a pariah (no pun intended). Suppression of people's opinions, whether they are racially motivated or not, will always encourage extremism. There needs to be greater dialogue, and an open one at that. Problem is, is that certain political groups have begun to dominate the discourse and, by supposedly taking the moral high-ground, have suppressed anyone else...thus, we have Oldham, Burnley, Thurrock, Gravesend etc etc. The BNP have skilfully broadened their politics ( to include education, transport etc) and are making the most of people's disenfranchisement and loss of public voice. Long live these Forums...but they don't count for much really.

Personally, I think the problem is not so much a "racial" one (opinions based on social Darwinsim, colour etc). I think it's more to do with "culture"...as UK's post above illustrates.

Deep down, most people in the world are inherently conservative (do not like change). We even hear of people living in the countryside as resenting "townies" moving in and supposedly changing the character of their "villages"...and usually the "migrants" are white!

All the Asians and West Indians I know and get on with are all British. We go down the pub together, laugh about the same things, share similar opinions, and come from a similar social class. I'm not mates with any of those who have not either embraced the social freedoms that we enjoy in UK, or who continue to strictly adhere to their religions. Does that make me racist for associating with my own kind-even tho' they are not white?

And believe it or not, some of my non-white friends feel the same way about recent influx of assylum seeekers, because they also consider it unfair for someone to "waltz in" and claim maximum benefit etc, without having (or being made to) contribute to the country. Their parents and grandparents didn't do it, so why should this new lot? That's their rationale.

Personally, I think the Beeb have just operated a 'Damage Limitation' excercise.

I hear this morning that the Kilroy programme will continue in the same vain each morning with GUEST PRESENTERS.

The producer of the programme ????

Ok,just checking!I see your logic but Gravesends immigrants have intergrated fairly well, though by no stretch of the imagination is there no racism. Most of the racism that i've seen/heard has been against the Kosovans and Albanians and the "trouble" they cause. Though it is true they do cause trouble i don't think they should be blamed, what do you expect to happen if you leave a group of young men to their own devices when they aren't ALLOWED to work?Common sense really.

As for Halal shops...easy they pay rent they can have what they bloody like there, would it be ok if it was Fish and Chips or pie and mash everywhere ?

Well ...yes...Pie and mash..fish and chips...its English!! Pie and mash is a English as it gets .
I have to say Urchino, and I am trying not to sound patronising, but I say to you what I would say to the politicians who are in power. Get out there, get amongst it, walk down Barking High Street at 1 am, see if you get to the other end, live next door to a family of them, have them park there untaxed un registered motors outside your house. Let them pi55 in your front garden, let thenm start a car valeting business in your street while recieving all sorts of benefits, and having all sorts of cars parked everywhere, making it impossible to get near your house with loads of shopping.Let them threaten your children with a knife while taking their mobile phones.
I hate to say this Urchino but you are young and have yet to experience what really goes on while you are trying to make a decent life for yourself and i also suspect that you are still at school/college?..Again I am not having a pop at you, just trying to open your eyes to what really goes on.

I noticed on Ceefax news last night that some members of the Saudi parliament (if you can call it that!) were taking a rather aggressive stance against certain prominent women who dared to attend without their head scarves. Now if that isn't suppressing your women...

Not Kilroy woz ere...but Kilroy woz RIGHT!
