I understand that one of players sent off for Edgeware was Wayne Grant, for pushing the referee over. Methinks he'll be having a relaxing time for the next few months if it's true.

Wayne sent off surely not!

It depends on what the rules of the competition state on the subject, if anything. You'll have to look in the League Handbook. The Laws of the game do not state a minmum number of players.

Some competitions give a minimum number of players to start a game but say nothing about how many you need to finish it. This would be at the discretion of the referee. In the event of a game being abandoned the referee has no power to award th egame, or the points, to either team. He/she has to submit a report on the circumstances to the competition, who will then decide. There are usually rules and guidelines laid down in the competition rules.

The Laws Of Association Football regarding Law 3-number of players state "A match is played by two teams, each consisting of not more than eleven players, one of whom is the goalkeeper. A match may not start if either team consists of fewer than seven players"

The decisions of the IFAB (the people who make/ ratify the laws) state "Subject to the overriding conditions of Law 3, the minimum number of players in a team is left to the discretion of national associations. The Board is of the opinion, however, that a match should not continue if there are fewer than seven players in either team"

I can only assume that, as the FA Handbook only gives the wording of Law 3 (no. of players that start the match) and the IFAB's Decision 1, stating that it is the Baord's opinion that the game should not continue with fewer than 7 players, there is a lot of discretion left to the competition organisers.

This would appear to be to allow games at a lower level under FA rules (such as Sunday leagues) to continue when one side ends up with fewer than 7 players. As for the Isthmian League, who knows what a competition organised by that lot is going to do? I would suggest that anyone wanting to visit a brewery does not ask Nick Robinson and Co. to sort out the details!

In practice you would abandon the match if one or both sides were reduced to less than 7 players, unless competition rules (which cannot over-ride the Laws) stated otherwise. There is an issue of safety involved as well. I seem to recall that the Mercury Waltham Sunday League stated 8, but I may be wrong.

The Isthmian League will give detials in their handbook, as do all leagues - including Sunday Leagues.

Many moons ago, if my memory serves well, East Ham United travelled to play Bowers United but five players went to Kenneth Road, Thundersley instead of Pitsea so the game kicked off with Bowers having 11 players and East Ham 6, with no one bringing to the ref's attention that you must have SEVEN to start. The score was 20-1 and remained for a glorious 36 hours, the Senior League record before soem red faces annulled it on the Monday.
