EXILES - match report v Eton manor

Town upset Eton

Enfield Town 1 Eton Manor 0

Eastway Essex Senior League

Town went joint top thanks to an early David Allen strike.

With leaders Waltham Abbey going down to a shock defeat at London APSA, it proved to be a good weekend for Jim Chandler's side.

Both teams are now on 40 points, though Abbey remain top due to a better goal difference.

Town dominated the game, but still ended up hanging on for the final whistle.

Rudi Hall had the best chance of the early exchanges, but his free-kick from 25 yards was hit straight at the keeper.

With Allen and Matt Negus spreading the play down both wings, Manor were being stretched at the back and, with only ten minutes gone, a good one-two between Negus and Asa Pamplin allowed Negus to cross from the left.

The ball just evaded the keeper and Allen appeared at the back post to throw himself at the ball to divert it into the net for what proved to be the winner. Allen had another chance moments later when he cut inside the box, but his shot lacked power. Glen Connolly then had a chance for Manor with a shot from the edge of the area, but Andy Hall did well to gather.

Town continued to press forward with Negus and Lee Smith both having chances. This period of dominance was only challenged by a long-range shot from Johnny Quinn.

When Lee Smith closed down Carl Prince in the Manor goal, the latter spilled the ball wide and Pamplin was on to it in a flash, rounding the keeper, only to see his pass blocked. Town were unlucky not to get a second when Allen hit a fierce shot on the turn, but it went just wide.

The second half was an anti-climax for Town, as they failed to press home the advantage earned in the first half. Allen lashed a dipping shot just over and a good chance went begging after a mix-up between Carey Wright and Smith.

Manor had a great opportunity to level when Steve Reading was played clear on the right, but his shot went over the bar.

Eventually, Town's threat diminished and the last ten minutes were a nervous affair, though the hosts held on, helped by the fact Manor had a player red-carded in the dying minutes.

u Town have no match this weekend. They return to league action on January 29 when they host London APSA.

Meanwhile, plans for the tsunami disaster appeal fundraising game at Goldsdown Road on February 6 continue. Among the names confirmed to date are Steve King, Nicky Ironton, Steve Terry, Al-James Hannigan, Dave McDonald, Micky Engwell, Brian Stein, Martin St Hilaire, Marc Salmon, Mark Pye, Gary Fitzgerald, John Richardson, Andy Pape and Brian Hammett.
