DARREN WATSON

It is my opinion that Darren is over weight and not match fit, however i have seen enough to understand why CK has held on to him,for example the cross come shot late on in the first half that the keeper tipped over the bar,for the the most part though he is the victim of his lack of conditioning,it is the real chance of him producing something mercurial, that is always on the cards, good luck to Darren,if he gets fit he will always score goals, however how long can we persist with Darren in the the present mode.

He is a class act on his day and generally has a lot of skill for such a big man. Starting him off has not been good for both himself and the team so far but sooner or later he has to get match fit for the full 90 minutes i.m.o. I know it may be a step back but maybe he should return to being a substitute and brought on for the last 20 minutes or so as he was superb when doing that at Ashford. Scared the wits out of the opposition when coming on and they didnt know what to expect from him on those occasions. Always showed skills then and generally won matches for us too.If only,as you say,he could maintain his fitness and indeed improve it then he would become one hell of a player at this level. He is always going to produce something out of the ordinary but sadly this term so far he has not sparked as we all know he can. A goal or two will get him back into shape of things but for now a substitutes role may well be the answer just so long as he IS used near the end of the game. We need more flexibility up front at the moment but we also need his undoubted skills in the game at some point.

The problem with Darren is that we have been saying that for two seasons now. Yes he could be a reasonable player but can we afford to keep carrying him in this way. It should be a personal thing keeping fit and I would have presumed that he would have tried to get match fit through the summer. With a small squad can we afford a striker who can only last half a game. With Leon missing on saturday he was our main striker, with Jermaine Brown only playing his second match, and he had to be replaced. That is not good enough.

Your point is valid, however the same can be said of Oates.(shall get slated for saying this) His fitness also needs looking at. Yes,we all know he had an operation and believe me that has been taken into consideration but it has been a while now since that op. Sometimes we could do with a little more speed on the overlap down that wing. He too should be looking at getting more fitter.Dont get me wrong here I wouldnt want to change him with anyone at the moment, well not for anyone I can think of anyway,as his undoubted talent is there for all to see. I also understand that they are part-time players,so we have to take that into account too.

But getting back to Watson yes, your comments above are sound.

Darren was a big reason we were far more affective in the first half as he was keeping two defenders busy.

I just wish he was more aggressive and could get his fitness sorted out <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

completly agree ben, darren was having one of his better games, shame about this ongoing fitness problem he has had over the last 3 years.

On a slightly different note I have just been reading a programme from the 97/98 season when we played Fulham. With 9 league matches remaining Syko was on 30 goals and Bugsy on 24, Oh for two more players like that!!

I think thats where your wrong MS,if Darren comes on as sub and gets the winner he is worth his weight in gold.

Id rather have Darren than Hilaire and Burke put together. But, I do agree he is a last 20 minutes player.

I agree with Benjamins post tat if darren ties up two players, then that should leave more space for others to take advanatage of.

Also the Darren/Leon combination has not had much chance to get going yet ,and could just materialise into something good.I can see Leon being his mentor and bringing the best out of him

As i posted elsewhere, in championship season of 2001/2 we had not scored a single goal after 3 games !!

He should have scored with that flier over the bar. Once again a player not hitting the target with his first opprtunity, taking one more touch than is nessasary.Am not saying he was the best player out there by a long chalk. However I was impressed with him more so than some others I could name.
