I was just wondering if anyone else had noticed that we seem to be playing a right midfielder in the right back spot. Now Im not saying Game isnt do well but we have a young lad James Smith who is a natural defender sitting on the bench !!! Maybe its me but doesnt that seem weird !!!

There are stranger things out there than trying the wrong position <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" />

Flippant answer now out of the way.

I would suggest that the reason is, is that Matt Game is playing ok in that position.

The same would suggest that Ross is playing well on the wing. He is tracking back and defending as well.

There is a school of thought that we have some players that can deputize in certain positions. Matt Game as right back, Ross Wareham on the right wing, Jamie Dormer has played centre of midfield as well as on the left. Richard Thomas, when he was with us could play in the centre of defence (and yes, I acknowledge that perhaps he plays better there).

The question is, if Matt Game is doing well in that position, why change it? Yep, in retrospect, maybe he would've been the spark in the middle of the park we needed last night, the same could be said of playing George Lay but hind sight is an exact science. With the performance of Saturday afternoon under our belts, the only change was Parker for Thomas and Parker, I thought, did his job.

The difference between the two half's was as JL said during the closing 10 minutes of the game. In the first half, we defended the half way line, in the second we were defending deeper, almost, at times, on the goal line. We also knocked the ball about more in the first half. Okay, there was little end result but when we did play the ball on the ground, Folkestone were in trouble, reduced to the typical Ryamn League "hoof" out of trouble and as we were pressing, it did fall to a 'Ricay player. If we persisted with the first half game plan in the second half, we may have got something out of the game. As it was...we didn't...on both counts.

Justin has also made some great decisions too, think Danny Hockton, Nathan Elder, Leon Hunter, Gothard, Pat, Macca.

How many of our players would walk into another team? I think the majority of them, ok as a team we are not doing so great at the moment, but as has been said on here we have the players to do it. My point here is would we have these same players if it wasnt for Justin?

If you stand near the dug out you will hear justin yelling at the team to pass it.

So what if we have a right back on the bench? everyone so far has said Gamo has done a good job there so if its not broken no need to fix it.

Maybe other players form has resulted in another player being tried in a different position, I'm thinking George Lay here. Ok the lad was ill with mumps or somthing and hasnt set the place alight yet so rather than let him struggle on its got to be a good idea to try someone else there.

Richard Thomas - well, i remember him here the first time and like most i thought he was good. I saw him for chelmsford last season a few times and he looked better than the rest of his team. Justin bought in a player who looked a safe bet, but he just didnt perform this season.

The point to my posting is that you can blame a manager for many things and i agree justin has made some odd decisions at times in particular substitutions, but if he has limited options and lets face it with injuries and players being off form what options have we except to try players in different positions? Seems to me people are saying players are playing out of position but that they are not actually playing badly in that position, so whats the problem?

I think the point Blue monday was trying to put across was whats the point of having someone like Jamie Smith if youre not going to play him?

Agreed Matt Game has done ok at right back

A subs bench will always have a duplicate of certain positions, I'm sure Jamie will get his chance as will the others.

When they do get their chance lets hope they step up, and make the position there own.

I'm not disrespecting our current starters in any way, but if the subs can keep a position when they are given a chance, then we have good progression and competition in our squad.
