Goalkeepers

Recommended Posts

Just wondered what you guys think about the goalkeeping situation at the moment?

First has Mel left? and if he has why have we not signed a replacement for him? While I think that Dale has made a great effort since replacing Mel and is indeed and asset for the future I feel that his inexperience has probably cost us today. Though of course it would be wrong to blame him for todays 2nd half demise I do feel that at the back in general we looked pretty solid and both goals seemed to come after Dale failed to hold the ball in the air, which is not his strong point, but somthing that he will learn in time. I feel we need a more experienced guy between the posts right now. The other point I would like to make is that even if Justin is satisfied with Dales performace why have we not got a backup keeper on the bench? we lost the game at home to Maldon because of this I feel. I really think we have the basis of a good team now with the likes of Tom and Trotty coming in to improve the side and once Nathen and Danny start firing again we should be a handful for most teams in the league. We just need to realise that 2-0 is a dangerous score for us and that the game is never won in the firat half. To finish I would like to wish Dorms a quick recovery, and lets hope we can get things right against Chelmsford next week.

I think we've had this argument before. (eg after Maldon at home) How many points would a sub keeper won us this season, I would say 3, last season? None I can think of. (before people mention Staines away, the only goal Ross let in was the penalty from the resulting incident) I really can't think of other times. Would a sub keeper make any difference yesterday? I expect if people did research the 5th outfield sub earns more points in the long run than a sub keeper.

The only times I want a keeper on the bench is for cup games and big games when winning/losing to a promotion/relegation rival is vitally important.

You seem to do a complete u-turn there Martin. Winning/losing EVERY game is vital, so surely there should be a sub keeper for every game. As to the argument about how many points a sub keeper earns us, how many points does having a lad like Jamie Smith on the bench earn us. No disrespect to him, but he sits on the bench and never plays. And how often do you need an emergency right back anyway?

I disagree, over 42 games winning/losing every game is not vital, you will never win every games (not even Chelsea). All you've got to do is get more points than the rest and a 5th outfield sub will get you more points than a keeper.

Your arugment about having an emergency right back on the bench is more a case of have we got the right outfield players on the bench or not.

I dont see how you can say to the sub keeper, right your on the bench today because its a cup game, but the next week say, 'have a rest today, were not that fussed if we win or not'.

A cup game, you lose, you're out, there is no tomorrow.

Last game of the season you need to avoid defeat to get promotion, you lose, you don't go up, there is no tomorrow.

Mid October league game, you lose, there is another 30 games to catch up.

I look at it this way, if a sub keeper is going to make a difference to 1 game per season while the outfield sub who's position he takes up will make a difference to 5 games per season, then I go with the outfield player. I'm afraid Maldon at home was just tough luck.

Its a bit like poker, if you play the odds correctly you will win more than you lose.

Is having four outfield players not enough? Every game is important, its what makes a season and determines the ability of a side in the final league table. If you want to get into the situation you described, then its the previous 41 games that got you there.

Anyway, lets go back to having 2 subs. Far more fun!

A substitute? That's the trouble with you youngsters, you don't know you're born! We only used to dream of having a sub when I was a lad!

Didn't Liverpool once win the league and European cup playing something like 60 odd games whilst using only 13 players ! Played with broken legs in them days i guess !! Feck me, in todays game you have to have nearly 30 players in your first team squad ! Me, I think it is just a fashion accessory for the managers to say how many groupies they can attract !!

You 'ad it made lad...When I was young, players used to dreeeaaaaammmmm of being paid. We used to get to the ground, half an hour before the last game finished, lick our boots clean with our tounge and if we didn't perform, our manager used cut us open with a knife and dance on our grave.
