That 4th Relegation spot

Not that it will bother us as we will be mid table by the end of the season.

However I have been doing some research into it and quite simply the team that finishes 4th from bottom with the worst points per game average in either of The Ryman Premier, The Southern Premier or The Unibond Premier Leagues will be relegated.

AS of yesterdays games the stats for the teams in each league with a chance of being in this position are as follows ( I have ignored those in the bottom 3 places)

Evesham 0.9167

Gloucester 0.9231

Hendon 0.9583

Cirencester 0.9600

Chesham 0.9600

Ashton United 1.0435

Slough 1.0800

Runcorn 1.0800

Margate 1.0833

Gateshead 1.0870

Harrow 1.0909

Ossett Town 1.0952

AFC Telford 1.1304

Bromley 1.1818

As you can see there is not much in it and from now to the end of the season EVERY point is important more ways than one.

Joseba - Echo Cookie's comments - Great Research.Let's hope it doesn't come to this.Dread to think if it does -

Will CK's promised superior summer signings still come ?

Repercussions on ground development.

Lower attendances/revenue etc.

Playing in a league, lower than Ramsgate ( Has this ever happened before ? )

Well that's the 'Doomsday Scenario '.....

The Good News is we play Staines on Saturday, and they have only lost away once in the Ryman Premier this season..........

Now where did I put my happy pills.........

Joseba raises an interesting point. It maybe the case that the home game against Hendon could be a relegation decider! As you can imagine this has not been the first time Margate would have had an issue with relegation and goal difference or goal average as it was in season 1968/1969. Margate's playing record for that season was slightly better than Cheltenham Town who were relegated to the First Division of the Southern League. In the 1969/70 season they lost at Ramsgate but won 4-3 at Whaddon Road. Now look where they are. ( Cheltenham that is not bloomin' Ramsgit )

MFC P 42 W 14 D 7 L 21 F 79 A 90 Pts 35

CTFC P 42 W 15 D 5 L 22 F 55 A 64 Pts 35

Margate's away win at Wellington in their final leagie game ( Telford United ) was the crucial decider.

I'm sure one of you will work out the goal average. A couple of interesting points. 1. Look at Cheltenhams goals scored and look at our record so far this season. 2. Margate drew more games than Cheltenham.

Of the other three clubs to be relegated Guildford Cty and the then Rugby Town no longer exist and the old Bedford folded in the early 80's........................and the team who finished just above Margate? Burton Albion who managed a great result today against Man Yoo reserves. Well done indeed.

SL Premier Champions and SL Cup winners that season were Cambridge United with Hillingdon Borough ( also no longer around in their first incarnation ) second.

Margate beat rivals Dover 5-1 at Hartsdown and drew 4-4 in the return league game at Crabble.

Halcyon days

agree with sss on most things I find it incredible that most of the posters on this site still post so many positive comments about the team and management when to be honest the team are performing crap. Will they stil be saying these things if we get relegated. Who will they blame then. They won,t be able to blame the team or manager. Still theres always the refs.

teamster if you go back to the begining of this thread you will see that the team that finishes fourth from bottom in The Ryman,Unibond and Southern premier leagues with the lowest points per game will be relegated whilst the remaing two teams will not.

Hence my list of points per game of the clubs that could finish 4th bottom.

  • 2 weeks later...

Positions after Saturday 28th January as follows:

Evesham 0.8929

Cheshan 0.8929

Cirencester 1

Hendon 1

Runcorn 1

Ilkeston Town 1.0357

Northwood 1.0370

MARGATE 1.0370

Ashton United 1.0769

Wealdstone 1.1071

Slough 1.1429

Folkestone 1.1538

Harrow 1.1923

Ossett town 1.2083

As you can see the first 3 clubs are from the Southern League where it looks like that 4th spot may come from but if we can get another 18 points we should be safe.

Joseba, I agree with your final statement that the 4th from bottom to go down is likely to come from the Southern League. Mathematically this will be the case if the distribution of points within the bottom clubs in each league remains broadly the same. (Leagues with clubs with fewer points in the bottom three mean that there is more to go round elsewhere). Hopefully we will not need to rely on this.
