Worthing 1 Billericay 3 (after extra time)

Recommended Posts

A snow shower just before kickoff gave the pitch a coating of white and with the freezing conditions the pitch had a slippery surface. We played with 5 across the middle. Dorms at the back with Macca, Scott Forbes and Lee Hodges on the flanks. Gamo supporting Nathan up front wherever possible. Played some great passing football in the first half on a difficult surface. Cross from the right gave us the first goal, the keeper dropped the ball into his own net under pressure from Nathan. For the rest of the first half we continued to dominate.

Second half we were not bale to get our passing game going and Worthing came more into the match. The equaliser came from a corner on the left which was headed in at the near post. With Tom Poole replacing Forbes we reverted to 4 4 2. Fair score after 90 minutes as we did not play as well in the second half.

The small band of regular supporters had to settle for a late night in the freezing weather. There were lots to warm us up when Simmo scored from closed range after 2 minutes of extra time. Town got back into their passing game which resulted in a 2nd for Simmo a few minutes later. We dominated the rest of extra time and came out worthy winners and a semi final with Bromley.

Team

Dale

Henty Macca Dorms Kerrigan

Forbes Leon Simmo Gamo Hodges

Elder

Poole for Forbes

White for Hodges

Alex Collins for Henty

Other subs: Millard and Colton

Mom: Difficult, good all round performance from all of the team. James White looked good when he came on.

When we passed the ball they couldn't live with us. After they equalised we seemed to go into tense mode and lost all fluency about our play. Simmons goals were quality and overall I thought we deserved the win. Man of the match is a close one, definately Hunter first half, but overall I'd give it to McSweeney.

Really a game of two halfs and extra time!!! First half we were magnificent and for over elaborating our domination (and a superb save off a Nathan Elder header), should've been clear by a few more goals.

The second half was dissapointing for reasosns as Ryan and Dilbert mentioned but it was business as usual in extra time.

The ref was very inconsistant. Booked Leon for a challenge and then let a Worthing player get away with a similar challenge without a word, is an example that comes to mind.

Anyway, well done to all the lads. It proved to be an enjoyable evening out even though it was cold.

Maybe the ref was worried that his whistle would pack up , and so he blew it randomly to reassure himself it still worked, but did not want to over waste its life on such tomfoolery as fails and the like.

Worthing must have been concerned about the second half after our last game. They got right in our faces, pumped the ball long and generally made it difficult for us.

It took a while for us to get going again, shame Simmo didn't score a few minutes earlier, I was fckn freezing.

All in all a good nights work, Simmo did well considering he hadn't started for a while, and I liked the look of young James white.

So it's Bromley now and that will be a toughie.

Their management and players have a point to prove after recent announcements by the club.

If any of you are watching England tonight, look out for some of our players, they are seated in the front row of the centeneary stand.

It was cold and as a Ryman league ref he maybe couldn't afford one of those new "all weather" whistles that are available. It's the one where the "pea" doesn't freeze up.

Jonathan Davies is a commentator on BBC on matches with the correctly shaped ball, and I admire his approach.

During the Ireland vs. Wales match on Sunday, midway through the first-half the referee called both captains together and warned them that the ball was being 'killed' at the breakdowns, and he wanted to "get some motion into the game". That was heard via the microphone link thingy and Jonathan Davies immediately said "If he wants to get some motion into the game, he should put his whistle into his pocket for the next 10 minutes".

Well it made me smile.

We were quality in the first half. The passing movements we put together were as good as anything I've seen from anyone in our league this season.

In the second half Worthing got into it more as Forbes and Hodges faded but their finishing was quite poor.

But ultimately the point to take out of this match is don't go for a piss as extra time is about to start as you might miss something!!
