Bands who you thought were good when you were younger...

...and then later realized were cr@p. For example, 2/3 years ago I bought a cd by 'Oberman'. Back then I thought it was brilliant and played it to death. However, tonight I had a 'cds-I-haven't-listened-to-for-ages' session and put the said cd on.

It was rubbish

I now realize that it was art-student-britpop and can't believe I bought it. Anyone else ever had such an experience?

Also, while I'm here, I bought Surfa Rosa by the Pixies the other day. Is this album a combination of two albums as it's called " Surfa Rosa and the Pilgrims and after track 16(caribou) there is an unlisted song which makes me think that it is a combination(if you see what I mean).Still an amazing album though.

Cheers me dears! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/beerchug.gif" alt="" />

The old school Ooberman eh? With their classic 'Shorley Wall.' Hmm. Nice.

Can't say that I have bought an album when I was younger thinking the band was good only to realise they're really quite rubbish. Some albums have not lived up to expectations, however. The main one that springs to mind is Action Spectacular's follow-up to their amazing debút album, From Here On In It's A Riot. The 2nd album, titled Everything's Going To Be KO Really isn't as good as I thought it would be, although I suppose if I didn't have the debút album EGTBKOR would be excellent.

Deacon Blue, in about 1987/88 I thought they were the brill and then came the whole Madchester scene to steer me towards the man I am now, If I'd carried on listening to Deacon Blue I'd be in my late 20's listening to Celine Dion and Phil Collins.

How about bands you liked at the time, went off them for whatever reason, then reaslised they were actually classics - Aztec Camera, got into them Deacon Blue era, went off them as I thought they were Deacon Blue like but now realsie that all their early stuff (postcard records) are classics. Same with Prefab Sprout.

How about bands (and people in bands) who you thought were rubbish and most people liked, then still thought they were rubbish and people started to aggree with you about, then more people thought they were great and you still thought they were rubbish - U2 (Bono)

Queens Of The Stone Age (Rated R)

At The Drive In (Relationship of Command)

How about bands you liked, then you bought an album of theirs, thought it wasn't great, then listened again recently and thought actually it is very good (Red Hot Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magik)

Right. How about bands you'd never heard of, that you heard mentioned once or twice but couldn't recall any of their songs, then you went to a gig of theirs and it turned out to be quite good, but then you still can't remember any of their songs and you can't be bothered to get their albums? (Pitchshifter, 2000)

(soon to be The Helicopters and The Datsuns, although these two could be quality. So I'm told.)

I love the Smiths. Mad, get the album 'Louder Than Bombs' or The Singles album and make sure you listen to 'This Charming Man'-pure class.

GHA, I kind of like Elton's earlier stuff-rocket man,the ORIGINAL version of candle in the wind, Your song etc- but I don't really like his recent stuff. I know he's an easy bloke to slag off but I just find it a bit bland really. I'd rather listen to him than Phil Collins though!

MAD - As the Chubbmeister says, you will get on with 'Charming Man' and I'd add 'How Soon is Now'. It sounds like you probably like your music quick and high impact, you need your taste to mature a bit, because something is slow or melancholic, doesn't make it bad, in to the mighty Radiohead yet MAD??

I think the artist I thought was pap but turned out good was Stevie Wonder, 'Superstition' and 'Mistra Know It All' are just superb.

Got to agree about Elton, these recent awful efforts with Blue and some awful artists shade songs like 'I'm Still Standing' and 'Rocket Man' which are classics wheter you like the guy or not.
