Result Vs Performance

Recommended Posts

We football fans really are a fickle bunch.

You see we’re never entirely happy whatever the result. If we win, but the skill and performance was not what we anticipated, then we have a moan-up.

Yet if we play a blinder but fail to win, then we have a moan-up.

I will admit, I was disappointed with our performance Vs Maldon, I couldn't have been happier with the result though, but after a few days refection I have come to the conclusion that I was being selfish and unrealistic with my expectation, and the result IS more important than the performance.

If we were to win every game we play next season without once playing well, I would be very very happy. Now the clear and right response to that would be, If we won every game, then of course we ARE playing well and our performance would have been superb. My assumption that we were poor would be complete tosh.

LIke I said, fickle.

Going back to the Maldon Game, Ok we went 3-1 behind, but let’s not forget we fought back to 3-3 and that wasn't luck.

We won our first senior trophy in 15 years and there I was thinking we didn't play well. I feel a little ashamed of that, because all that really mattered was winning, and that we did.

So it's a big Well done to the team, I now know that WAS a great performance, and its also one that we would not have been able to muster a year ago. And If anyone has any doubts about our performance or spirit, then just take a good hard look at Cap’t Jamie Dormer, they don’t come any better.

Never again will I look for a negative when we win. Tuesday’s game has taught me to enjoy and not be too critical.

Not preaching, you guys do what you want, I’m just telling of my experience and thoughts re Tuesdays game

in 10 years time you will only remember the win and not the fact you haven't played well.winners are the only ones remembered...asks holland 74 hungary 54 brasil 82

In competitive matches ultimately it is the result that counts. It would be "nice" to play well also, but it's all about getting the three points, getting through to the next round or winning the competition ;-)

In friendly games I feel that performance is more important than the result. How are the fitness levels?, how is the shape of the team?, have we got the right players?, have we got enough players? etc etc. At the end of the day whether we win lose or draw against Witham on Saturday it will make no odds, hopefully we will play well and avoid any more injuries or suspensions.

I was a bit surprised that a few people were a bit down on Tuesday, after all if you can't enjoy a cup win, you'll be doing gin and razor blades by Christmas. I think it was just a by-product of some indifferent efforts in pre-season thus far and perhaps the feeling that the squad has yet to be finalised.

It'll be a totally different ball game when the league season starts when I think supporters will look for consistency of performance as a key indicator as to how successful we'll be.

I don’t know...was you?

My post was about me and how I felt.
I felt a little guilty that instead of accepting the win wholeheartedly, I also considered the performance.

Our lads gave their all, they fought back, and won, yet I still had the need to analyse their performance. In future, when we win, I will sit back, and enjoy the moment.

I thought I gave a balanced review of the game. I must say, I did look at the performance and was certainly not "punching the air" on the night...and like you felt a bit guilty. In the end, it will be the win we will remember...

I certainly agree that the lads showed character and fought back but would also repeat my opinion that we have enough assertive players not to be in a position to "fight back"...Saying that, it certainly was an exciting night of football (maybe a bit early in the season for us supporters - I was knackered after the game).

I said well done to the team and it certainly has got the season off with a cracking start.

Well done to all.
