Behind the goal

I have been watching Windsor and Eton for a few years now and I love the atmosphere and camaraderie, standing behind the goal on match days. But over the past few years, it has become embarrassing, with the amount of swearing and the abuse and aggressive behaviour aimed at the opposition’s fans. I am not adverse to using the odd swear word, but some of the fans seem to lack the ability, when standing behind the goal, to string together a sentence without feeling the need to swear, which I feel is uncalled for!!

The other problem I have is the abuse and aggressive behaviour aimed at the opposition’s the opposition fans, for example at last night’s game, when we started chanting “easy”, when we went 2-1 up, but when Hanwell went 3-2 up and responded with the same chant, our fan’s seem to take as an insult and started abusing their fans. I stand behind the goal and I know passions run high, but what I am complaining about is not the instantaneous reaction to a decision not going our way, but the constant swearing when there is no need to. When I first started attending, the fans behind the goal, would argue the referee decisions and try to wind up the opposition players, hoping to gain an advantage for Windsor and Eton. Whilst singing in support of the club and a lot of these song funny. But now a lot of the songs which are sung tend to be about the opposition, which I feel will not help Windsor and Eton.

As we all know, Windsor and Eton are indebted to Peter Simpson, for all he has done. But one of the things Peter is trying to so, is to increase the number of fans coming through the turnstiles on a match day. But to be honest if I had young children, the last thing I would do is bring them to a Windsor game to be subject to this language and level of abuse. We need to encourage as many people a possible to attend games and get behind the team, to hopefully have a successful season.

From the stand it didn't sound to good either,so Peter could hear it along with other directors and fans.It doesnt do WEFC any good at all and in other clubs could lead to trouble.

Probably fair comment. If it is to be stopped then someone with authority needs to ask for the language to stop. You don't ask you don't get.

People should know where the line is, and when they are crossing it, but some people are not so considerate to others.

I cringe sometimes but can live with it..I have a clear conscience and wouldnt be offended if someone came up and asked for the language to be tonned down.

I don't have a problem bringing my kids to the footie. Unfortunately swearing is part of life now, and they can hear obscenities anywhere.

You have a good point about support for your own team and abuse of the opposition.

Perhaps a name and shame article in the programme? Maybe Geggster could check out the legalities of that?

We used to have signs around the clubhouse asking for people to basically keep their language clean. Can't quite remember what they said exactley.

The problem is you can putt hese things all round the ground, but unless you have someone who is going to physically do something about it when it happens I wouldn't waste the ink trying to stop it.

Is this the forum for Windsor cricket club?????? For a start anyone doing that ''easy'' chant is and embaressment, and should take thier tongue from out of Tim Lovejoy's [****!!****].

I think that people should realise this is football, not a game of golf or cricket. At football people get worked up and frustrated and will then start swearing. It's all part of the game and happens up and down the country. It is also part of everyday life and so is seen as the normal thing to do.

''But now a lot of the songs which are sung tend to be about the opposition, which I feel will not help Windsor and Eton.''

Opposition are there to be beaten, therefore they need to be put-off and intimidated (alright I know this is windsor), not given a jolly good time and a clap. Most of the stuff aimed at the oppo fans was just banter and I doubt anything was meant by it. Wally seemed to be enjoying the attention.

''is to increase the number of fans coming through the turnstiles on a match day''.

Personally I doubt this will ever happen in the numbers people are thinking of. Don't get me wrong I would love to see Windsor get bigger gates and be in a better position. But the people of this town don't have a hunger for lower level football. It will always be a dedicated 150 or so. There will be the odd turnout for ''big'' cup games but then people will go back into the woodwork.

I was going to say sorry to doris for my langauge on saturday to be honest in front of his wife and i think all words bar the c-word are pretty 'acceptable'. Let's not forget the positive atmosphere we've created over the last two games and yes perhaps we do all get carried away but that is because of a love for the club! After all let's not forget where the main bulk of fundrasining and supporters help from the club comes from.

Now someone has highlighted it, all be it anon, perhaps it will be toned down

I have to agree that it could be toned down a little bit. I have been guilty of such offences and maybe with a new start on the pitch we could make a new start behind the goal and try to make all of our chants and songs positive for the team and as inoffensive as possible. (any Slough song still allowed!!)

Oh, and I shall also be bringing my young Windsor supporter on Saturday, so a proper family day behind the goal.UTR

I attended the windsor game at Bashley, the first time i have atteneded a Windsor game for almost 12 months.

I to was behind the goal and would like pay tribute to windsor supporters who are amongst the most loyal and (allowing for the standard of football) passionate supporters not just in non-league but the whole country.

However i would add that the swearing and hostility that certain fans show is unacceptable and if it was displayed at clubs with bigger and more voiciferous followings it would have got those doing it a few slaps. Windsor have always been vocal but there is a very fine line between support and acting like a [****!!****].

I would also add that aside from causing the club problems with fines and such like it does nothing to make those venturing into Stag Meadow or Terry Hall for the first time feel comfortable or make them want to come back and people have told me so to my face.

This is no big deal but lets put energy in backing the team into chasing lost causes and the like and not against opposition fans who most of the time are gulty of nothing more than following their own local side (slough games aside obviously).

See you at Hillingdon. AFE
