In my book being a fan of a long dead singer who was way, way past his sell by date when he died makes you 'sad'.

How about Queenie Wahine's Papaya for Q? smirk

for real elvis fans everywhere...the lyrics of dixie which epitomised for me the true nature of the kings blues heritage and deep southern roots...

'Dixie' Lyrics

I wish I was in the land of cotton,
Old times there are not forgotten,
look away, look away, look away, Dixie land.
In Dixie Land where I was born in,
Early on one frosty mornin'
look away, look away, look away, Dixie land.

I wish I was in Dixie, hooray! hooray!
In Dixie Land I'll take my stand
to live and die in Dixie,
Away, away, away down south in Dixie,
Away, away, away down south in Dixie!

elvis was many things but first and foremost a master entertainer who understood the life and time of his audience in post war america and into the 60's and 70's.. he was truly a man for the time he was in...he very astutely came up with the american triology of war songs from the civil war that still to this day effects the hearts and minds of millions of americans...

he used to ad lib the lyrics from the battle hymn into dixie and when he did so the hairs on the back of the listners head would freeze....

Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord:
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored;
He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword:
His truth is marching on.
(Chorus)
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
His truth is marching on.
I have seen Him in the watch-fires of a hundred circling camps,
They have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps;
I can read His righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps:
His day is marching on.
Chorus
His day is marching on.

I have read a fiery gospel writ in burnished rows of steel:
"As ye deal with my contemners, so with you my grace shall deal;
Let the Hero, born of woman, crush the serpent with His heel,
Since God is marching on."
Chorus
Since God is marching on.

He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat;
He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgment-seat:
Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him! be jubilant, my feet!
Our God is marching on.
Chorus
Our God is marching on.

In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,
With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me:
As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free,
While God is marching on.
Chorus
While God is marching on.

He is coming like the glory of the morning on the wave,
He is Wisdom to the mighty, He is Succour to the brave,
So the world shall be His footstool, and the soul of Time His slave,
Our God is marching on.
Chorus
Our God is marching on.

you didn't need to be an american to feel it and when he followed that with rock a hula baby you really knew that a master audience manipulator was at work...he could switch the tempo and atmosphere in a second...

in my opinion and for all his recording success...one of the most underated american professional entertainers of the 20th century..an everlasting icon alongside of others such as monroe...sinatra...james dean and the err...simpsons.....(only joking).... grin

It's true, Essex is in a time warp - carried back to 1963.

Next you will be telling me that Elvis works in a chip shop on Canvey Island!

Cant you set up a thread about some proper British music like Brotherhood of Man, Bucks Fizz or even Showaddywaddy?

Ian, i love American Trilogy (Dixie). It is always referred to as Dixie by Uncs ever since he, the lovely nette and i were away in Spain last year. If you've not seen Uncs get up and do it on Karoke you just haven't lived! guitar dance

Don't worry Uncs i wont mention the sea, sand and chloe

The only trouble with Elvis, in my opinion(and I was never a fan, but could see his great skill), like most entertainers, he didn't know when to retire. Unfortunately, most youngsters will remember him for his last(awful)performances, not for his earlier electric performances.
After hearing how bad Paul McCartney sounded on his last tour here, I'm glad the Beatles broke up when they did. I can still listen to their great music, and not imagine how they would sound like now!
